How to improve children’s teeth cleaning habits

How a London dentist is campaigning to improve children’s smiles

Reaching out from a destination dental practice in London, the #LoveToBrush campaign aims to make brushing fun. Here’s how!

There has been a lot of talk in the news recently about the rise in the number of children needing their baby teeth removed in hospital. But while no parent would want to see their child go through that, the everyday reality of getting kids to brush their teeth and limiting their sugar intake can be a huge challenge. After all, we’re talking about little humans here – in all their strong-willed, complex, unpredictable glory!

That’s why one London dentist is leading a campaign to improve children’s teeth-cleaning habits – by making tooth-brushing fun and social, and by offering prizes! Recognising the need for dentists to take a more empathetic approach with parents, the #LoveToBrush competition from Happy Kids Dental aims to raise awareness about the benefits of oral hygiene, while offering the chance for a free taste of its state-of-the-art practice in Marylebone – an incredible space where child-focused interior design, specialist-led dentistry and the latest technology all conspire to make families love coming to the dentist.

children's teeth cleaningSo how does #LoveToBrush work?

Ready to discover just how different the Happy Kids Dental experience is? Here’s how it works. Simply take a photo or video of your child brushing their teeth and post it with the hashtag #Lovetobrush on social media. Be creative, but stay safe – no brushing while biking! Every month, one random winner is drawn from the entries received and wins a free children’s oral health check, along with a high-tech AirFlow treatment* for the parent, worth £85!

#LoveToBrush aims to prove to kids (and parents) that oral hygiene can be fun, and doesn’t have to be seen as a chore. And because it’s social too, it means we can all help spread the word about the importance of early years dental health. Russia for the World Cup 2018

My Toddler takes on Russia on the World Cup

As a family of some crazy football fanatics, this summer Tessy a team member of Kensington Mums decided to take on an adventure and go to the World Cup with her toddler. She shares with us her adventure with a toddler in tow.

Over to Tessy…

This summer I decided to take on an adventure and go to the World Cup with my toddler. Before you think that I’m crazy, I need to say that my husband’s job required him to be in the Russia for the whole duration of the World Cup. So it was either to be a single mom with a toddler for a whole month, or take advantage of the opportunity and be adventurous. I opted for the second option.

world cup

Traveling with a toddler within Heathrow Airport is quite simple, the airport staff are very friendly and accommodate parents of young children on the fastest lines for security. Once we pass security, my kid loves to go to the Soft Play, I think its a great idea that gets him engaged into the idea of traveling. He gets really excited when I tell him we are going to the airport because he gets one hour on the soft play. This works perfect for me, because once the airplane takes off, my toddler is exhausted and pass out for 2 hours.

world cup

I’m guessing you guys already know pretty well all the travel hacks there are in Heathrow, and if not, please send us a comment and we will make sure to write about it. So enough with airport  travel, lets talk about Russia. I found Russia to be surprisingly beautiful, it is as majestic as Paris and as dynamic as London.

Getting from the airport to the heart of Moscow was a bit tricky. Russia upped their security because of the World Cup, so you have to go through security to go in and out of the airport. Once out of the airport you have two choices to get to the city, either taxi or uber, or the train. Moscow being a big city suffers of crazy traffic, it can take you more or less 2 hours to get from the airport to the city on a taxi. This to me means CAR SICKNESS! so I choose to go on the train. My kid was so exhausted from the air travel that when we got to the train he couldn’t stop crying and telling me he wanted to walk, to be on the street, he really didn’t want to be on another transport.

world cup

When we finally got to our hotel Marriott Novi Arbat, all the fun began. Just as a side note, I was terrified of the idea of this experience with my kid, in my mind the World Cup is for football fans that are drunk on the streets shouting all day. However this was not the case, when we got to our hotel it was completely branded with the World Cup, it was transformed into a Disney like experience. The entrance of the hotel was an arch of footballs, once up the stairs there was Zavivaka (the World Cup mascot) greeting everyone, an ice cream stand that was giving out ice cream and popsicles  throughout the day.

As for Toddler Friendly experience, Moscow has various parks for them to play around. All the restaurant were Kid Friendly, meaning they provided a high chair and kids activities for our toddler to be entertained before our food arrived. Russians were thrilled to play and engage with our son, he was getting gifts from all the waiters in all the restaurants in exchange of a smile and a high five. They even offer a kid friendly Ballet experience which we definitely tried (we only lasted an hour though).

To engage my son into the World Cup fever, all the bars and restaurants were open to receive kids, so most of the games that were taken place we watched in various restaurants. This also gave us the opportunity to introduce our son to new foods and flavors he wasn’t used to. I also decided to be more adventurous took him to the Fan Fest to see the Mexico vs. Brazil game (I’m Mexican so I didn’t want to miss out on this) and he was thrilled. There was music, food, and games. The crowd was very respectful of space and Russians were very attentive to security measures this meant that we had a lot of fun at the same time we felt very secure.

world cup

So if you are ever traveling solo with your kid here are my top five tips to plan around:

1- Plan your flight more or less around nap or sleep time. This will make your life easier on the plane.

2- Always arrive to the airport with time, so that your toddler can explore the airport and walk around.

3- Carry snacks and activities for the plane, our favorites are: pretzel sticks, apples, yogurt and bananas. Stickers, drawing, play dough and as a last resort Paw Patrol.

4- Do some research of where the nearest parks are in the new city you are visiting and try to find a hotel near by. With this you can give your toddler some playtime and they will be perfect for when you want to explore the city.

5- Relax and enjoy, the time with your kids is precious and being fortunate enough to teach them to love and travel the world is a gift. So don’t stress out, relax and enjoy what comes your way.

Review of Warwick Castle’s Dragon Slayer

Warwick Castle

A visit to Warwick Castle’s Dragon Slayer experience

A visit to Warwick Castle – which dates back more than a 1,100 years, has plenty to keep children and adults occupied, including a Horrible Histories-themed maze, a castle dungeon (recommended for those over 10 as there are some scary elements) and the Time Tower – a multimedia experience charting the history of the castle.

Anyone who visits this August however is in for an even bigger treat, with the chance to view ‘Dragon Slayer’- an immersive live show playing on selected evenings throughout the month. It’s the first time that Warwick Castle has put on a night time show and if you are familiar with Merlin Entertainments (which operates Warwick Castle, as well as other family favourites such as Legoland, Madame Tussauds, Shrek’s Adventure London and Chessington World of Adventures), you might have an idea of what to expect.

We were promised an evening of ‘spectacular entertainment’, including fire jousting, stunts and a projection light show. Add the chance to ‘glamp’ in medieval-themed tents located just five minutes walk away from the castle, and it didn’t take long to persuade the kids to jump in the car for the two-hour journey (or it’s just under two hours by train from Marylebone).

warwick castle

Admittedly, none of us knew much about the story that has inspired the show. Dragon Slayer is based on the legendary 10th century warrior, Guy of Warwick, who fought against beasts and mythical creatures across Europe. including a giant cow and dragon, all in the name of love. But the staging and actors’ performances meant we were hooked from the start – so even if you miss some of the storytelling, the action more than makes up for it.

The show kicked off just before sunset in a jousting arena; we all jostled for the best views and were treated to fire-eating, epic jousting, sword-fighting and equestrian stunts. We were then led from the arena to the castle grounds for the second half of the show, with performers hurrying the crowds along.

This is where special effects really came into their own, with a projection light show on the castle walls really bringing the story to life – the dragon scaling the walls and breathing real fire was particularly impressive. The evening was rounded off with fireworks above the castle. We enjoyed this second part the most and at around an hour and a half, the show is the perfect length to keep even the most fidgety of children engrossed.

warwick castle warwick castle

We visited on the opening night (3 August) which was pretty packed; it took a while for the crowds to move from the arena to the grounds and for the light show to start, but this might be down to getting the timings right. Toilets by the jousting arena wouldn’t go amiss either!

We kept the medieval theme going with a overnight glamping stay in a Kings Luxury Tent in the Avenue of the Kings in the castle grounds. New for 2018, these tents are beautifully decorated and feature a four-poster bed and two single beds. It’s definitely one of the most comfortable glamping set-ups I’ve experienced.

Dragon Slayer is available with a number of packages – the silver package for example includes an immersive dining experience with a hog roast, while the gold package offers a three-course royal banquet in the castle’s Great Hall, with dedicated hosts and additional

entertainment, including music and the chance to interact with some of the show’s characters. The hall is steeped in history – a great way to get into the mood for the evening ahead.

Dragon Slayer debuted on 3 August and is also taking place on these days: the 4th, 10th, 11th, 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th August 2018.

Making healthy eating fun

Rachel Slinger, founder of Eat2Treat shares her inspiration for her exciting children’s lunchbox she has launched just in time for back to school!

healthy eating

Becoming a mum to Jack last summer was a wonderful experience, but the early days of motherhood came as a bit of a shock and I missed the sense of achievement that my fast-paced career in Finance had brought.

A trip to the park one day with my three year old niece changed that though. Seeing how the lovingly (and healthily) prepared lunch we’d been given turned into a battle because the first thing she saw was the two chocolates provided as a ‘treat’ for after the healthy food had been eaten, gave me the idea of ‘hiding the delights’ until the main food is eaten.  So, within a few hours, Eat2Treat was born!

Food influences how our children feel, behave, develop and ultimately how healthy they become as individuals. Ensuring our children have a healthy lifestyle starts with them eating properly and with children consuming an average of one-third to one-half of their daily calorific intake from their lunch, it’s a great place to start!

As parents, we spend huge amounts of time planning and preparing healthy, well-balanced and nutritious lunches for our children. The sad fact is that many of these carefully crafted lunches come back as a load of uneaten leftovers, or even worse end up in the rubbish bin!

Treatboxes incentivise children to actually consume the healthy balanced lunches that parents have so lovingly prepared for them. Treatboxes are sectioned for variety and portion control with a ‘secret’ bottom layer containing the ‘treats’ which is only revealed once the first layer has been finished, supporting the golden rule that ‘if you eat your dinner you can have your pudding’.

healthy eating

From talking to other mums it became clear that in reality non-food items are now widely used as rewards. The Treatbox uses the collection of stars as an incentive to work towards a non-food related reward. The stars are magnetic and are inserted onto the lid of the lunchbox, which acts as a reward chart, so the child can easily track and monitor their progress.

Non-food rewards magnets that come with our lunchbox currently consist of: activity time; park time; a new toy; a new magazine; a new pack of stickers; tablet time; TV time; cuddle time and story time. We even have a blank reward magnet for you to customise with a white board pen, should your reward be different to our standard rewards magnets.

healthy eating

Rewards can be used as positive reinforcement for modifying negative behaviours. Rewarding is a concept that children are very familiar with and one which is successfully used throughout parenting and the classroom with positive results.

Children don’t have to even open the lunchbox to see how fun and interactive it is. The array of magnets that sit on the lid enable both customisation of the box and act as a reward style game! You can purchase our allergy stickers and alphabet letters to add your child’s name and dietary requirements to the magnetic lid.

We will also be releasing new illustrated incentive packs for the top of the lunchbox, which will be sold separately, allowing you to easily update the box for the latest ‘trends’. This coupled with its durability means our lunchbox is to last throughout childhood, rather than just until your child gets bored of the lunchbox design.

For every purchase of a Treatbox through our website we will donate 55p to The Nourish the Children Initiative. Each 55p donation buys a child one days worth of VitaMeal, which contains the right amount of calories, key nutrients and vitamins that a malnourished child needs to grow and develop.

Personally, I know that leaving the security of a hard earned and successful career is risky, but this will allow me more time to be mumand I’m hoping to achieve something for myself that is bigger than just me reporting numbers and that leaves a lasting impression. I would love to change children’s eating habits for the better using fun!

Five Day Trips Out of London

day trips

The summer holidays are slowly coming to an end, yet you’ve got to entertain your energetic offspring. The capital obviously has lots to offer but if you want an escape that’s further afield then you won’t go far wrong with these options to the west of London. Perfect days out, no matter how old you are…

1. Cliveden National Trust

It’s always been popular, but now it’s got the royal stamp of approval (Meghan Markle stayed here the night before her wedding) it’s likely to be even more so. Don’t let that put you off. There’s plenty of space – 375 acres to be precise – for everyone and things to keep all ages entertained. The Yew Tree maze is a must (and you may even bag yourself a quick break as your kids find their way to the centre and back out again). There’s a storybook play den for the under 8’s, a natural play area for older children, a water garden, a six acre Parterre stretching from the historic and infamous Cliveden House Hotel to the river Thames, boat trips, walking trails and summer events specifically designed for children. Literally, something for everyone – if the weather’s good! Oh and good news if you’ve got a dog – there’s currently a trial going on so dogs are allowed in almost all areas of the estate.

2. Windsor Great Park

Continuing the royal wedding theme, why not spend a day getting to know this historic market town – home, of course, to the Queen? This is a good option if you don’t drive as it’s probably easier to get to on public transport. Why not start your day at Windsor Castle where there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained. See the State Apartments and Queen Mary’s dolls’ house, relive the wedding of the year at St George’s Chapel and see the spectacle that is the Changing of the Guard. (11.00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) There are arts and crafts activities for children throughout the summer months.

Outside the castle and if you have older children and visit on the second Thursday of the month you may be interested in a new event – tea and cake with a British Army Veteran who’ll share their experiences of war. This is organised by Royal Windsor Tours and tickets can be bought from the Information Centre or online.

If being outside and at one with nature’s more your thing then head to Windsor Great Park. With a Royal history spanning over 1,000 years there’s plenty to see and do. Younger children will love the animals on the Totem Pole at Virginia Water lake, or the play area on the Obelisk Lawn. There’s a fantastic new café and restaurant in the Virginia Water Pavilion and an Environmental Centre where you can see up close the wildlife and natural heritage this great park has to offer.

3. Odds Farm

For those of you with younger children, Odds Farm is a must. Rain or shine it has it all. Aside from the obligatory animals, there’s soft play, an outdoor adventure playground and new this year – a water play area – suitable for swimsuits and bare feet in the sun or waterproofs and wellies in the rain. Tractor and trailer rides, mini golf and an adventure maze complete the line up and throughout the summer holidays there are theatre performances, arts and crafts and games for everyone to enjoy. If some farm action is on the cards then older children might prefer Peterley Manor Farm – where you can pick your own fruit throughout the summer – choose from strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, whitecurrants and blackberries. And after you’ve worked up an appetite you can enjoy brunch or lunch in the Wild Strawberry Café.

4. Bekonscot Model Village & Railway

Not far from Odds Farm and Cliveden is Bekonscot – the world’s oldest model village. You can’t spend a whole day here but there’s plenty to see and do. There’s the model railway which runs through six miniature towns all stuck in a 1930’s timewarp, a ride on railway, over an acre of perfectly manicured gardens and a children’s play area. If you do want to make a day of it you can combine your visit with a two and a half a hour boat ride from Windsor – taking in the sites on your way. https://www.bekonscot.co.uk/

Legoland Windsor Resort Library Imagery

5. Legoland

And from mini models to those of all shapes and sizes at the UK’s favourite children’s theme park. With 55 rides and attractions there’s sure to be something for everyone at Legoland Windsor. You can definitely fill a full day here – and even stay overnight. Pirates, Pharaohs, Knights and Vikings grace this land and new for 2018 there’s a Lego reef, a mini America attraction and even a Round the World tour. If you buy your tickets in advance online they’re cheaper and look out for adults go free vouchers on cereal and chocolate packets over the coming months.  Read our latest review here.

Top 16 tips how to juggle work and kids on holiday

summer holiday

Are you doing the Summer Holiday Juggle?

How to juggle children and work in the school holiday.

How are you managing the school holiday and work juggle? Gone are the days when one parent stays at home and looks after the children in the school holidays.  Every family is different when it comes to balancing work and children in the school holidays and there is no one size fits all.

Where some parents can work from home, some have to find childcare and the juggle of childcare and work coupled with the guilt that you are not spending every minute of the school holidays with your children is real for every parent. Especially, when you consider that we have eighteen summers with our children before they become adults and we want to make each one count. The rise in holiday childcare doesn’t help either.

So how do we keep everyone happy?

Finding the balance and getting it right for work, clients and your children is difficult so the most important thing is to manage everyone’s expectations including your own. It’s a different balancing act working from home or if employed and expected to be in an office. It also depends on whether you are employed or self-employed as you may have more autonomy and ability to manage and stagger your workload.

It’s tricky when your children are bombarded with images of social media from their friends, especially if they see their friends having amazing outings and holidays. So, it’s important to explain to them that people only put the best bits of their lives on social media, and try and make sure you do spend one on one time with them. If you are having a staycation then check out our brilliant list of things to do in London and places to swim in London.

Here are our top tips for managing the juggle and making the holidays enjoyable for everyone.

  1. Manage expectations of availability for clients, work and family. If you know you are going to have to spend the morning working tell your children so they don’t expect to be going out. Set them up with an activity and plan ahead for when you are working at home.
  2. Set work boundaries and times that you will be working and don’t let the normal routines slide out of the window, make sure that everyone is up at normal times and doing their jobs to help around the house. If the children don’t generally help out at home then the holidays are a great time to start a new challenge or routine for them. Emptying the dishwasher, tidying the hall – coats and shoes, sorting the clean washing, tidying bedrooms etc.
  3. Try to stop looking at what everyone else is doing and feeling bad that you aren’t doing the magical zoo trip or holiday. Avoid the whole Instagram envy and stop comparing how you are managing the summer holidays compared to others.
  4. Make a list of where you would like to go and some holiday goals. Keep the list of the local swimming pool, cinema times and local activities to hand in case you need inspiration. Encourage the children to add to the list.
  5. If you work from home or yourself, can you slow work right down and tell clients that you will be away or in holiday mode? Then they won’t be expecting a reply straight away. Put an out of office on to say that you will be checking emails at specific times and if it’s urgent to message you.
  6. Manage the expectations of your children, tell them how and why you are working and plan your day if you are working from home.
  7. Think about when you work best. Is it early morning? If so try and get up before the rest of the house wakes, or do you work best in the evening? When do you have the most focused energy for work?
  8. Tell friends and family that you are working from home and let them know your availability rather than working around theirs.
  9. Chances are you have friends in the same predicament. Can you have a rota between you where you all help each other? Set up a Whats app group where you can all communicate any childcare requests for help. Wherever you can take up friends and family on offers of childcare help.
  10. If you need to be in an office – Speak to your employer, explain any childcare difficulties you may have over the holidays. Is there a way to potentially work from home on one day a week?
  11. Plan ahead as much as you can for childcare but also take each week at a time. Six to eight weeks can seem like a long daunting amount of time to fill if you look at it as one big block of time, instead break it down into manageable chunks of time.
  12. Look into holiday camps and voucher schemes at work to help offset the costs of these.
  13. Willing grandparents? Ask them if they will help out, but be honest and tell them what you need them to do, if it’s just a day or an afternoon or if it’s a week. Manage their expectations on how long and when.
  14. The fear of being over dependant on screens and preventing them from spending the whole holiday on their tablets is a real dilemma for parents in the school holidays. So use the screens when you need the children to have them. Don’t let the screens become a habit in the holidays. If you only allow an hour during term time then continue this through the holidays too.
  15. Make the screens work for you. Set the children a challenge and have a digital detox and digital curfew and if they have to be on screens when you are working then get them on some educational apps – see our list here!
  16. Try not to over commit, saying yes to every invitation and inviting everyone round will put unnecessary pressure on you and you may end up having to cancel. A good rule of thumb is to try and plan no more than two activities a day.  One in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Ultimately managing everyone’s expectations and your own will go a long way to managing the work and holiday juggle. Remember your circumstances are completely individual and you shouldn’t feel that you should be doing everything. Take the guilt away from all the things you feel you should be doing and enjoy what you can do and avoid comparisonitis!

Surrounding the chair is a flock of 50 flamingos, as remembered from Alice’s famous croquet match. The space is so colourful and playful and we couldn’t wait for the Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea.

We were seated in a hidden “press” table on the top behind the fountain. I was joined by my friend and blogger Arnie to celebrate friendship and a late birthday. The staff greeted us and explained a bit about the afternoon tea experience and what to expect.

The menus are hidden inside vintage books, what a cute concept. As soon  as we got seated we realized that the chairs were not very stable as we were seated on tiny pebbles and so we had a tiny accident with our little fingers. We informed the staff about this and the manager quickly came to speak to us after that. With the menu, came the sugar presented in a musical jewelry box, so quirky! What we soon noticed was all the attention to detail. The tea was provided in little potions with a name tag of each tea type.

The teas were each described on an individual card within a pack of cards which was such a lovely and novel idea and the waiter also explained the combination of the various teas available. The tea is full of classics with a twist, from Tweedle Dee’s lemon curd financier to Alice’s cinnamon, apple and peach ‘Drink Me’ potion.

After a few sniffs, both Arnie and myself decided on what to go for.  As we were chatting away, also also taking picture of the beautiful setting, our our Teas soon arrived, in the most  eccentric and trendy tea pots and cups. You will see these in the pictures too.

Soon after, arrived the most beautifully presented 3 layered cake stand full of intriguing treats, sandwiches and scones. It was hard to decide what to start off with! The sandwich plates featured ticking clocks and also includes the traditional scones with clotted cream and jams. Evert hing presented had a touch of Alice-inspired touch to it.  For this special collaboration the Mad Hatters Cuvée Rosé Tea also included the Pink Floquet Cake – a strawberry flamingo with a white chocolate Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé croquet truffle.
