Top 5 benefits of yoga in pregnancy

Today’s article is by Libby Stevenson, Certified pregnancy and postnatal yoga teacher and a mother of four. She is originally from New York City and has been living in London for the past 26 years where she raised her 4 children.  She shares with us the physical benefits of yoga in pregnancy and why its so important for you.

Over to Libby…

When I became a yoga teacher I took the time to think about who I wanted to teach yoga to. When I was pregnant 26 years ago, yoga was not as popular as it is today. In those days, the only safe forms of exercise during pregnancy were walking and swimming. As I do not swim, I did a lot of walking!

Also, I had recently arrived to the UK. I had no family nor any friends. As a pregnant foreigner, I would have loved a place where I could do some exercise and meet other mums-to-be (Wish Kensington Mums excited then!).  With this in mind,  I certified in pregnancy yoga. I learned it from the best – Uma Dinsmore Tuli – the Harvard of pregnancy yoga teachers.

As a woman who did not have yoga in her pregnancy and who teaches it now, what can I share with you about the benefits of yoga in pregnancy?

yoga

Let’s start with the physical benefits – and there are MANY.

  1. Pregnancy yoga is pro-active and anticipates your needs in the birthing room.  All the movements prepare you for giving birth: it is all about opening the hips through adapted asanas (poses) and releasing down through pranayama (breathing techniques).  Regular practice of both ensure that you embody the movement and the breathing so when you are giving birth it will feel completely natural.
  2. The movements can help to alleviate common pregnancy complaints such as lower back pain and exhaustion. It also helps to keep the pelvic floor in shape so that it is easier for it to recover postnatally. However, there is so much more to pregnancy yoga than the physical.
  3. It gives you an hour to yourself. An hour to feel you have regained some control over your life because pregnancy is a transitional time for women.  A lot of changes are happening: the shape of the body, the hormones make you feel more emotional and give you a “foggy brain”, sleeping becomes difficult and relationships can change.

For some women pregnancy can be blissful. Wonderful!

4. Pregnancy yoga allows you the time to “just be”:  in the moment, in your body. It gives you the space to look after yourself.

5. It gives you the opportunity to connect with other mums-to-be. In my yoga classes, I always give time for my students to meet and to talk about the experience of being pregnant.

For some, however, it can be a confusing time – how will the baby impact day to day life and the relationship with a partner? Is this the right time to have a child? What about the financial aspect of having a child?

For others, it can be isolating. Perhaps they live far away from family like I did.

So begin to embrace the changes and allow me to help you on that journey through yoga.

Namaste.

Motherhood by Mara Martin

1. Please introduce yourself: Name, what do you do & how many children you have.
My name is Mara Martin and I am a stay at home mom and model with one daughter named Aria.
2. How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a mother?
Although I don’t model full time and my main job is a stay at home mother, both can be challenging. I think that every mother, whether stay at home or they have a career are more than just mothers.  We as mothers do so much on a day to day basis. Juggling feeding times, sleep schedules, learning and play time along with taking care of the home, makes our jobs as mothers so much more. To add a job in there is just another thing to manage. For me, putting my daughter’s needs first is the most important to me.  But I also want her to learn from me as a great example, showing her to never stop dreaming and chasing those dreams. She is my absolute motivation to be a better mother, working mom, and overall person.
3. What top tips would you give to any working mum?
Know that although it may be hard to leave your child, that you are setting an amazing example for them. Showing them that they too can be strong and independent as well as a loving and nurturing person as they grow.  And that’s the most important thing; that you teach them and help them develop to becoming the best versions of themselves.
4. What do you love most about London?  Do you have a favourite spot with your children?
I’ve never been to London but hope to visit and show Aria around some day! I absolutely love to travel and I want Aria to see the world.  London is on the bucket list!
5. Ho do you define quality ‘me-time’?
When you have a child, “me time” is going to be different than it was before. At least that’s how it is for me and I’m ok with it!  But be sure to take time to yourself  and recharge because it is good not just for you as a person but as a mother too! Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your baby, so you can the best mom you can be!
6. What is your favourite & least favourite thing about parenthood?
I have so many favorite things about being a parent. One of them is being able see the world through her eyes. I love teaching her to love and smile for others.  Every milestone has been so rewarding for me because I know I am teaching her to become a happy, loving, and amazing person each and every day.
My least favorite thing is constantly worrying about her. The constant worrying about her well-being overwhelms my thoughts sometimes, but when this happens I take a deep breath, clear my mind, and I realize that she is going to be ok!
7. Tell us something people don’t know about you.
I love sports and music.  I can play the piano and learned at a young age and took lessons for 13 years. I played collegiate volleyball on scholarship in the Michigan and Georgia! Some of the best memories of my life are during that time.
8. Given we are all about embracing Motherhood, what advice would you give a first time Mum?
Don’t worry about what others say or do. Know you’re doing the best you can and that sometimes not everything goes as planned! As long as you are doing your very best for your baby, that’s all that matters. Oh and sleep ANYTIME you can when they sleep….!!
9. I’m a mum and…… CAN DO IT ALL
10. Finally, what do you love most about Kensington Mums?
I love how supportive you are to other mothers! It’s great to see women empowering other women with love and support!

Get in touch with us if you would like to be part of our motherhood exhibition. Email info@kensingtonmums.co.uk

The new revolutionary waterless car wash that comes to you

waterless car wash

We can’t get enough of all this sunshine (or rain), but with hose pipe bans recently declared across the UK, let’s talk about water… and the inevitable tree sap that sticks to our cars every summer!

Wash Doctors, a SW London start-up, have revolutionised car valeting with their on-demand, waterless car wash that comes to you. Now available in Kensington & Chelsea, you may have even noticed the Wash Doctors red jackets on a road near you!

wash doctors

Last June, two childhood friends Will Mapstone and Christian Steele decided it was time to shake the car wash industry on its head, founding the Wash Doctors app on the principle of saving your time and the planets precious water. Will, Founder & CEO, says, “We want to give back the luxury of free time and maintaining an incredibly clean car, sustainably.”

No more time wasted, long queues, or just putting it off altogether. Simply download the Wash Doctors app, pinpoint your car’s location, how long you’re parked for, and the rest is done for you.

wash doctors

To date, the team have saved an amazing one million bottles worth of water reviving cars in West London. Their professional washers earn 80% of every wash, and revive your car using just 0.5 litres of revolutionary solution, developed in California.

Will adds, “By switching to waterless, you have the power to save over 99% of water otherwise wasted at a traditional car wash.”

What’s more, Wash Doctors are on a mission to help improve global access to clean water. Recognising the water crisis to be greater than car washing, the team have pledged 5% of their profits made from loyal customers’ (every 4 waterless washes booked) cars to charity: water global water projects.

This charity is renowned for their transparent and accountable 100% donation model, bringing safe, clean water to over 8.2 million people to date. The team are also fundraising by running the Richmond Half Marathon this September.

As a community let’s support the waterless cause, trim the chores and spend our time doing more fun things! Download the app today, and enjoy 20% off your first wash using our code KENM20.

How to digital detox on holiday?

digital detox on holidays

We all really should do a digital detox on holidays?

(if only a few days of the holiday)

We all want to be disconnected this summer holiday, even more so after a recent article in the Telegraph with headlines “Parents’ excessive use of mobile phones is driving behavioural problems among children”.

So how do you log off and go off grid when you are on holiday?

Do you remember packing for your holidays when you were a teenager, you’d pack your music (depending on how far back in time you want to go… a Walkman, Discplayer, mini-disc player, ipod shuffle), a camera, several books, magazines, travel adapter for your hairdryer etc.

Now it’s smartphone, kindle, laptop, iPad of various sizes, chargers for every single device under the sun. Then multiply this by everyone in the family and it’s a lot of devices and a lot of adapters needed! Why do we still need to feel so connected when we are on holiday? Why can’t we just go back to those good old days when it was much easier to switch off as we had nothing to switch off!

The reason – we are addicted to our smartphones, our beloved smartphone that goes everywhere and keeps us in contact 24/7. Now it’s so hard to switch off. There is the expectation of work, despite putting your ‘Out of office’ on its really hard to resist checking your email, just in case. We have become so used to being present 24/7 that it’s impossible to switch off – it has become an accepted way of life.

In the work place we have made ourselves available 24/7.  It’s very hard to change the 24/7 mindset and reset the boundaries as you go off on holiday – as the expectation of communication is still lingering.

We worry excessively if we are not seen to be online checking in that work will forget us and make us redundant, or something will happen that we are vital to help with. Plus, we also suffer from a massive FOMO (fear of missing out) and we want to let everyone know what an amazing holiday WE are having.

We all know why we need to switch off and live in the moment and enjoy our holiday with our family and friends, we know it’s good for us mentally to switch off completely and that we can’t expect the children to switch off if we don’t.

Here are our 4 signs that you need a digital detox.

  1. You can’t remember when you last read a book or magazine
  2. Focusing on anything for more than a few minutes is hard and you find you are constantly distracted.
  3. Multitasking is a way of life and doesn’t work anymore
  4. You are constantly online and always making excuses as to why you are online, like you are working.
  5. Booking your holiday, you are obsessed with finding somewhere that has Wi-Fi or checking mobile coverage.

How to go about a digital detox when on holiday?

  1. Think about what you use your phone for and try and take away the need to have it so; take a camera, pack books or a kindle (We know it’s cheating slightly but restricted luggage allowances have not helped with taking books on holiday! You can’t check your social media if you have a kindle!) and magazines, wear a watch, take an alarm clock!

  2. Limit the number of devices you take with you and remove your email from every device that you can possibly bear to especially your smartphone. Remove your social media apps from your phone. This limits the times you will go to check it, suddenly your phone will have no draw = no addiction.

  3. Have a phone amnesty at various times of the day and only allow family to switch on at a certain time. Have a place to store phones so you know where they all are.

  4. Try a digital curfew. No phones before 10am and no phones after 6pm. Switch off the Wi-Fi if you have a choice.

  5. As a parent stick to these times too – lead by example.

  6. Tell your friends and family before you go that you are having a digital detox on holiday. Lessen the expectation to stay in touch and give yourself the accountability you need to actually do it.

  7. Use your phone to help you. Switch off all notifications, put it on do not disturb and flight mode. Don’t use your 4G and turn off roaming.

  8. Find somewhere in your room to store your phone. If there is a safe keep it in there or in a suitcase under the bed, out of sight out of mind.

  9. Out for dinner? Make everyone put their phone on flight mode or switch off. Tell everyone what you are trying to achieve, you’ll be amazed at how many agree with you.

  10. Take books instead, or a kindle then you won’t feel the need to reach for your phone just to fill time, break the habit of just checking your phone, where you just flit in and out of apps checking email, Facebook, Messenger, Insta etc.

  11. At work, set expectations that you won’t be contactable. Be firm with your office that you are away. Put on your out of office on with a clear message and set a back-up plan that if it’s really urgent they can text you, or tell them where you can be contacted. People suddenly find things are a lot less urgent if they have to pick up the phone and talk to you…!  That way you won’t be thinking you should check your emails – just in case…

  12. Don’t set unrealistic expectations on yourself, it’s hard to go cold turkey so allow yourself points in the day when you can use it.

  13. Switch off from social and stop worrying that everyone is having a better time and remember social media is a massively edited highlight of what someone wants you to know about them. It’s making them feel better by sharing their photos and shouldn’t be making you feel bad. If it is. Switch off!

  14. If you really need to switch off and you know it’s impossible then book a holiday that has limited Wi-Fi or no Wi-Fi (they do exist! In rural places!) Some companies specialize in digital detox breaks!

  15. By being offline and having a digital detox plan that you stick you, will result in you being more present with your children, enjoying yourself to the max, living the moment, dancing to the moment. If you didn’t take picture of it, does not mean it didn’t happen, as what stays behind is the memories we have captured in our heads, with family and friends and loved ones.

Have a lovely offline summer holiday and Let us know if you managed to have a digital detox on holiday this year!

Avocado Gazpacho

avocado gazpacho recipe

Avocados contain more potassium than bananas and 77% of the calories from avocado are from fat. Yes, it is one of the fattiest foods on the planet! However, this isn’t just any fat, this is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that has been linked to reduced inflammation in the body and is considered a ‘heart-healthy’ fatty acid. Her is a yummy recipe to try avocado gazpacho recipe.

Ingredients

600g (3 cups) tinned plum tomatoes, roughly chopped

1⁄2 cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped

1⁄2 red (bell) pepper, chopped

1 avocado, peeled and stoned

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1⁄2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

1 garlic clove, roughly chopped

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon chilli flakes (red pepper flakes)

sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Serves 2–4

Method

Put all the ingredients, except for half the avocado, the olive oil and the chilli flakes, in a food processor or blender with 40ml (21⁄2 tablespoons) water. Blend until fairly smooth and then add the olive oil. Blend again until smooth, tasting to check the seasoning.

Serve in bowls with the remaining avocado chopped and sprinkled on top, or in slices on the side, with the chilli flakes.

Top 5 Summer Dresses

We love summer, its a time to wear light clothes, have our legs out in sandals, instead of being tucked into winter boots. Victoria Genevieve is a personal stylist in London and one thing she understands more than anything with her clients it’s the need to look good on the outside but feel amazing on the inside too. She shares with us her top picks for summer dresses.

Over to Victoria…

This summer has defiantly been the season for dress wearing. Not only has the weather been perfect but the stores have had more choice than ever before.  As a mum and full time stylist I am a massive advocate of the dress.  The main reason being that it is an outfit in one and you just slip on some shoes and you are good to go.

Top 5 Summer Dresses

This dress is slightly more expensive for H&M but I actually own it and cost per wear it owes me nothing. I’ve been wearing it on repeat, perfect with some sandals and then throw on a blue denim jacket if you need to keep warm. I’ts also a good dress for throwing on for the school run or for those that don’t like to expose their arms and shoulders.

Blue and white is always a classic colour combo when dressing for summer. This lightweight dress is perfect for taking on holiday and again works well with a little denim jacket for chiller days.

For me this is the ultimate summer dress from Zara. I can literally imagine throwing this on in the morning and picking up my basket to go and collect fresh blooms and pastries. There are similar dresses all over the high street. Mango also has a fab strapless option

The ‘must have’ go- to brand if you are wanting to get away from the high street has to be Pampelone, www.pampelone.com

My Favourte dress this season has to be the Delphina Maxi dress, its just simply divine.

They also have a mini-me collection that works in collaboration with @mothers2mothers https://www.m2m.org where 100% of the proceeds goes to this wonderful charity.

I hope that helps for your summer holiday.
