8 Tips to Help You Move Forward After an Autism Diagnosis

autism awareness

Receiving an autism diagnosis for your child can be an emotional and overwhelming moment. You may feel a mix of relief, confusion, sadness, or even fear of the unknown. These feelings are completely normal. What’s important to know is this: you’re not alone, and there are meaningful, positive steps you can take to support your child and your family moving forward. In Olivia’s previous article she shares, how UniqBeyond is a journey of love, experiences and support. Read the full article here.

Olivia, Mums of two and founder of UniqBeyond shares her personal guide to help you navigate the early stages after an autism diagnosis.

1. Take Time to Process the Diagnosis

It’s okay to feel a range of emotions. Let yourself process everything without judgment. An autism diagnosis is not the end, it’s the beginning of understanding your child better and helping them thrive in a world that might not always be built for neurodivergent minds.

Give yourself grace. Seek support from your partner, friends, or a therapist. You don’t have to have all the answers immediately.

2. Educate Yourself About Autism

Knowledge is empowering. Learn about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from credible sources such as:

Understand that autism is a spectrum—each child is unique, with different strengths, challenges, and ways of communicating and processing the world.

3. Build a Support Team

Create a team of professionals and allies who will support your child’s development. This may include:

  • Paediatricians
  • Developmental psychologists
  • Speech and language therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Behavioural therapists (such as ABA specialists)
  • Special education teachers

Your child may not need all these services right away, but starting early with a coordinated plan can make a big difference.

4. Start Early Intervention

Early intervention services are designed to help children under the age of 5 develop important skills. These programs can include speech therapy, social skills training, and behaviour therapy. In many countries, these services are publicly funded or covered by insurance.

Speak with your child’s doctor or local health department to get referrals and understand your options.

5. Learn About Your Child’s Rights

In many places, children with autism have the legal right to educational accommodations and support services. In the U.S., for example:

  • Children under 3 may qualify for Early Intervention (EI) services
  • Children 3 and up may receive an Individualised Education Program (IEP) through their public school

Advocating for your child’s rights in school and community settings is key. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, push for evaluations, or request support services.

6. Connect With Other Families

autism awarenessYou are not alone. Other parents are walking this road, too. Join local or online autism support groups to:

  • Share experiences and tips
  • Get emotional support
  • Find your community and belonging at UniqBeyond.

These groups often provide practical advice that only other parents can offer from choosing the right therapist to dealing with public meltdowns compassionately.

7. Focus on Your Child’s Strengths

While it’s important to address challenges, don’t lose sight of your child’s unique gifts. Whether they have a deep focus, a creative spark, or a kind heart—celebrate their individuality. Encourage their interests and support their self-esteem.

Remember: autism is not a tragedy, it’s a different way of experiencing the world.

8. Take Care of Yourself

Caring for a child with autism can be demanding. Self-care is not selfish, it’s necessary. Make time for your own mental and physical health. When you’re supported, you can support your child more effectively.

Final Thoughts

An autism diagnosis is not a limitation, it’s a guidepost. It gives you the opportunity to understand your child’s needs more clearly and to connect them with the support they deserve. With love, patience, and the right tools, your child can thrive in ways you may have never imagined.

You’ve got this and we are here to help you at Uniqbeyond .

The Big Egg Hunt 2025

Easter Scoop 2025

This Easter, Elephant Family are proud to join forces with Clarence Court eggs for The Big Egg Hunt 2025 to help us raise vital funds.

We are uniting some of the world’s renowned creatives to bring a city-wide spectacle of egg-celent art. London is set to be dazzled by over 100 decorated large-scale eggs, brought to life by iconic names in not only art, but also design, interiors, food and retail. With the likes of Anya Hindmarch, LUAP, Fortnum & Mason, Chopard, Philip Colbert, Duncan Campbell & Charlotte Rey involved, this amalgamation of talented creators guarantees a spectacle for the whole City to enjoy, for the purposes of raising money for important conservation work through an auction of these wonderful egg sculptures.

From 24th March to 27th April, 2025, everyone is invited to find the scattered 2ft egg sculptures as part of a free-to-view trail across iconic locations and landmarks. From historic neighbourhoods like Chelsea, Canary Wharf, Covent Garden and Marble Arch, to famous cornerstones in London’s rich tapestry, such as Battersea Power Station, The Barbican, The British Museum and The Royal Albert Hall, each landmark provides the perfect backdrop to witness an exhibition like no other whilst exploring the Capital. The trail is only possible through the support of IBI Logistics.

Members of the public will be able to “collect the eggs” they find, ticking them off on a free app which is set to reveal prizes along the way. ‘The Big Egg Hunt’ App can be downloaded now on iOS and Google Play.

UniqBeyond: A Journey of Love, Experience, and Support

Uniqbeyond

*Sponsored Post

This article is written by local Kensington Mum of two, Olivia who is also the founder of Uniq Beyond.

I founded UniqBeyond out of a deeply personal journey, one shaped by love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. My son, now 10 years old, has autism, and for more than eight years, I have dedicated myself to ensuring he receives the support and therapies he needs to thrive.

Like many parents, when I first received my son’s diagnosis, I was overwhelmed. Autism is a spectrum, and no two children experience it the same way. I quickly realised that finding the right support was not just about medical expertise—it was about understanding, patience, and a personalised approach. I immersed myself in the world of autism therapies, working with top professionals from the Bahamas to Miami to London, always searching for the best strategies to help my son reach his full potential.

Through this journey, I gained more than just knowledge; I gained firsthand experience of what truly works. I saw the impact of compassionate, individualised care. I learned the importance of collaboration between parents, therapists, and educators. Most importantly, I understood that no family should have to navigate this path alone.

With this in mind, I founded UniqBeyond—a consultancy dedicated to guiding families through the world of autism support. At UniqBeyond, we work only with the best professionals, individuals I have personally worked with and seen produce real, positive results. Our goal is simple: to provide children and parents with the right resources, expert guidance, and unwavering support.

Autism is not a limitation; it is a different way of experiencing the world. Every child has the potential to grow, learn, and shine in their own unique way. Through UniqBeyond, I hope to empower families with the knowledge and support they need to help their children thrive.

This journey started with my son, but it has grown into a mission, to make a lasting difference in the lives of other families walking a similar path.
