Top Ten Tips for choosing the right Boarding Prep School

Top Ten Tips for choosing the right Boarding Prep School

Sponsored Content.

Selecting the right boarding prep school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. A prep school sets the foundation for a child’s academic journey, character development, and future opportunities. With so many excellent options available, it can feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Here are ten top tips from thriving Boarding Prep – Cottesmore School – in West Sussex, to guide you through making the right choice.

Top Ten Tips for choosing the right Boarding Prep School

  1. Define Your Priorities as a Family
Before visiting schools, discuss what matters most to you and your child. Is it academic rigour, sporting opportunities, creative arts, pastoral care, or location? Knowing your priorities will help you filter through options and find a school that aligns with your values.
  2. Research the School’s Ethos and Values
Every prep school has its own ethos – some more traditional, others more progressive. Explore the school’s mission statement, observe how staff interact with pupils, and assess whether the atmosphere feels nurturing, ambitious, or balanced. Choose a school where the culture resonates with your family.
  3. Visit in Person
Websites and prospectuses are useful, but nothing compares to experiencing the school first-hand. Attend open days, arrange private tours, and, if possible, see the school on a normal working day. Look at how happy and engaged the pupils seem, that’s often the best indicator of the school’s environment.
  4. Consider Boarding Options
Not all boarding prep schools offer the same structure. Some provide full boarding, while others allow weekly or flexible boarding. Think about what works best for your child’s age and temperament.
  5. Assess Academic Support
A good prep school should prepare children for senior school entry and beyond. Ask about class sizes, the curriculum, and how the school supports different learning needs. Don’t just look at results, focus on how the school nurtures curiosity and confidence in learning.
  6. Look Into Pastoral Care
Pastoral care is central to boarding life. Inquire about how the school supports homesick pupils, manages wellbeing, and encourages independence. Happy, cared-for children are far more likely to thrive academically and socially.
  7. Explore Extra-Curricular Opportunities
Boarding schools offer more than just academics. Check the variety of clubs, sports, and activities available. From drama and music to outdoor pursuits, extra-curricular life plays a huge role in helping children build confidence, discover new passions, and develop teamwork skills.
  8. Think About Location and Accessibility
Practical considerations matter. Is the school easily accessible from home? How often can parents visit, and what travel arrangements are in place for weekends and holidays? A convenient location can make the transition to boarding much smoother for both parents and children.
  9. Talk to Current Parents and Pupils
First-hand experiences are invaluable. If possible, speak to families who are part of the school community. Ask about their children’s experiences, how the school communicates with parents, and whether their expectations have been met.
  10. Trust Your Instincts
Ultimately, choosing the right prep school is about finding the best fit for your child. After visiting and researching, trust your instincts. If the school feels welcoming, the staff supportive, and the pupils happy, you’re likely on the right path.

Top Ten Tips for choosing the right Boarding Prep School

The Arabic Club for Kids – Raising the Standard in Arabic Education Since 2007

The Arabic Club for Kids

The Arabic Club for Kids: Raising the Standard for Arabic Learning in London. At Kensington Mums, we are always on the lookout for enriching opportunities that make a real difference in the lives of our families. Language is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children, connecting them to culture, identity, and the wider world. For many families, Arabic holds a special place—whether as a heritage language, a cultural bridge, or simply as a beautiful, rich language to discover.

Key Details at a Glance:

  • Classes from age 3 to teenagers (including GCSE prep)
  • Two London branches: West London and South London
  • Highly qualified teachers & child-centred approaches
  • Professional development and training
  • Proven outcomes and outstanding value
  • Celebrating culture, heritage, and identity
  • New West London Branch – 30% off this term!
  • Upcoming holiday camps and online classes

Kensington Mums tip: Don’t wait too long, enrol now to secure your child’s place. This is one extracurricular activity that will pay dividends for years to come.

The Arabic Club for Kids is an inclusive institution, welcoming all children to learn this significant world language. Founded in 2007 by Dr. Rabab Hamiduddin, the Club was created in response to the poor practices she witnessed in Arabic education. Since then, it has transformed Arabic learning in London through best practice, child-centred teaching, and professional expertise. Parents regularly remark how previous negative experiences have been turned around by the fun, engaging environment at the Club.

The Arabic Club for Kids

Why The Arabic Club for Kids is Different

1. A Child-Centred Philosophy

From the outset, Dr. Rabab was determined to put children at the heart of everything. Classes are not about ticking boxes or rote memorisation. Instead, they focus on creativity, play, respect, and curiosity—helping children build a positive, lifelong connection with Arabic.

2. Highly Qualified Teachers

Unlike many supplementary schools that rely on under-qualified staff or large classes, The Arabic Club works only with professional teachers and maintains a high teacher-pupil ratio. Educators receive ongoing training from language consultants and university faculty, ensuring lessons reflect the latest research in pedagogy and language acquisition.

3. Strong Outcomes and Value for Money

Parents sometimes wonder why the Club is not “cheaper” than other providers. The answer is clear: outcomes. Children don’t just make progress—they gain confidence, enjoy learning, and achieve long-term results. Many continue through to GCSE level with enthusiasm.

This enjoyment is priceless because it builds a lifelong relationship with the language. A new workshop for secondary school students also provides an age-appropriate pathway, with a GCSE option available but never compulsory.

It’s natural to consider cost when choosing activities. But a cheaper class that leaves children disengaged is no bargain. By delivering real progress, confidence, and cultural connection, The Arabic Club represents excellent value.

4. A Proven Legacy of Change

Since 2007, the Club has not only impacted its students but also influenced the wider field, raising standards and compelling other institutions to improve. It is more than a school—it’s a trailblazer that has reshaped expectations of Arabic education in London.

The Arabic Club for Kids

From Early Years to Teenagers and GCSE Success

The Club offers a clear progression from age 3 through to GCSE preparation. Young learners are introduced to Arabic in a fun, playful way, sparking curiosity and joy. As they grow, lessons become more structured, supporting them all the way to formal qualifications.

Parents love that this is not a short-term course but a long-term investment with visible results.

More Than Just Language Learning

At The Arabic Club, Arabic is taught as more than a subject. Classes celebrate culture, heritage, and identity. Children experience Arabic as a living, vibrant language that connects them to stories, traditions, and communities.

Importantly, this is done in an inclusive, joyful way, never heavy-handed. Here, Arabic becomes something children want to learn, not something they “have to” learn.

Parents’ Perspective

Parents across London describe how transformative the Club has been. Many felt relief after years of disappointing experiences. The difference, they say, is the club’s unique blend of professionalism, creativity, and care.

See Sarahs review!

“Ossama and I would love to say a huge thank you for a fantastic year with our daughter.
She had an absolute blast and learned so much Arabic. We are astounded by her reading and writing skills in just one year and her growing familiarity with spoken Classical Arabic and other dialects that we do not speak at home, which we are happy to see her identify and repeat back to us when we least expect it!”
“A learning environment is more than just a physical space —it’s the complex set of interactions between what we see and hear, what we feel and what we are learning. We make learning Arabic relevant to children’s lives and aspirations”

Celebrating 25 years of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground

Celebrating 25 years of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground

The Royal Parks charity recently celebrated 25 years of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground, located in Kensington Gardens.

Thousands of children and their carers attended on the day. The occasion was marked by running play sessions for children and sharing plans for the upcoming renewal of the playground.

The Royal Parks charity, which manages London’s eight Royal Parks, also celebrated another milestone by welcoming the millionth visitor for the year 2025 on the 31 August 2025*.

2025 marks over a quarter of a century since the playground opened and today the playground is more popular than ever. But after decades of adventures and play, some of the equipment in the playground such as the Galleon (ship) has reached the end of its life and needs a full replacement. This much needed renewal will ensure the playground is a fun, magical and welcoming space for years to come.

Rhona Harley, Senior Landscape Architect at The Royal Parks charity, said: “On the day of celebration, we were pleased to share with visitors how their views had informed the new designs of the Galleon, Treehouse and water play area. For example, recurrent feedback for the Galleon was that there should be more climbing elements, better access for all abilities and that we should bring back the sails. We have listened and incorporated all of these elements into the new design.”

Peter Heuken, Richter Spielgeräte’s Director of Special Projects, who was the original designer for the Galleon back in 2000, dropped by to join in the celebrations. He was joined by members of Timberplay, who together with Richter Spielgeräte are delivering the Treehouse and the Galleon.

He said: “I am immensely proud to have been involved in the original Galleon of this playground, and what will be the new one. Everywhere I travel from Canada to New Zealand, people know this park, and they know this playground. It’s a global reference for high quality public play.”

To find out more about the renewal of the playground please visit: Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground renewal | The Royal Parks

*Last year (2024) the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial playground reached a million visits on the 17 November

Autism is a spectrum, which means every autistic person is unique. Some may communicate differently, react strongly to sounds or lights, or prefer routines, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated with less respect.

Breaking misconceptions;Unfortunately, many autistic people still face misunderstanding, prejudice, and exclusion. Much of this stems not from autism itself, but from a lack of awareness and sensitivity in the wider community. Educating ourselves about autism and learning to be more accepting can make an enormous difference in creating a more inclusive society.

One of the first steps in supporting autistic people is letting go of stereotypes. Autism is not simply “a lack of empathy” or “a childhood condition.” It is lifelong and highly individual. Some autistic people may communicate differently, using few words, use certain devices , or nonverbal signals, while others may speak fluently but still struggle with social cues.

Autistic people are often labeled as “difficult” when, in reality, the environment around them is not accommodating. For instance, loud noises, bright lights, or unexpected changes in routine can cause sensory overload, leading to distress. This is not bad behaviour, it is a natural reaction to overwhelming circumstances.

Creating a more autism friendly world does not require grand gestures, just compassion and awareness.

Below are some ways how you can be supportive

  • Listen and respect boundaries
  • Be patient with communication
  • Reduce judgment
  • Adjust the environment
