The Ultimate Guide to Eliminating iPads from Family Meals

removing iPads from meal time

Sponsored Content

The Crucial Role of Communication and Family Mealtimes in Child Development or No More iPads at the Dinner Table!

In an era marked by technological advancements and fast-paced lifestyles, family mealtimes have taken on a new dimension. Many parents have turned to iPads and other devices as a means to keep their children occupied during meals. However, this trend, while seemingly convenient, will have a detrimental effect on children’s development. In stark contrast, French families hold a deep-rooted tradition of cherishing family mealtimes, emphasizing the importance of communication, which can significantly impact a child’s long-term mental health and capacity for open conversations. Mrs Alison Melrose, Headmistress of Cameron Vale School is known by all the children at the school for valuing mealtimes and good table manners. Her recent half-term trip to stay in a small hotel in the sunshine for some rest and recuperation after the busy start to the school year reinforced her concerns over the negative impact of iPad parenting.

With three different half-terms between my sons’ schools and mine, my husband and I took advantage and had a few days away by ourselves for the first time in 15 years. We were both horrified that every family in the hotel had a phone, or an iPad in front of their child at every mealtime.’

Family mealtimes provide an ideal setting for family members to connect, share, and communicate. They offer an opportunity for children to feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of belonging and security within the family unit. Research consistently shows that children who regularly partake in family meals tend to have better nutrition, higher self-esteem, and improved academic performance. Moreover, the act of dining together encourages conversation and the development of vital communication skills.

In a world characterized by rapid change and increasing digitalization, communication skills are more important than ever. The ability to express oneself effectively, actively listen, and engage in meaningful dialogue are skills that prepare children for a successful future. Family mealtimes provide a natural and relaxed environment for children to hone these skills. By engaging in conversations with family members, children learn how to articulate their thoughts and feelings, ask questions, and empathize with others. These skills not only benefit them at home but also in school, their careers, and their relationships.

While many parents use iPads and other electronic devices as a quick fix to keep their children quiet during meals, this practice has significant downsides. The mesmerizing screens may temporarily pacify children, but they also disconnect them from the family interaction taking place around the table. Instead of engaging in meaningful conversations, children become passive consumers of digital content, missing out on valuable opportunities to develop their communication skills and bond with their family. And, does everyone else in the restaurant also want to listen to Peppa Pig whilst they dine?

Furthermore, the excessive use of screens during mealtimes has been associated with several negative effects on children’s mental health. It can lead to reduced attention spans, hinder emotional development, and even contribute to overeating as children focus more on their screens than on their food. This habit can have long-term consequences on their overall well-being.

For our European cousins, mealtimes are seen as an essential aspect of family life. There is a strong cultural expectation that family meals are to be shared together, with conversation and communication taking precedence over everything else. This approach to family dining encourages families to sit down and engage in discussions during mealtimes, with an emphasis on savouring the food, fostering connection, and maintaining traditions. This is also true of England with the traditional roast Sunday lunch, which often seems to be for high days and holidays rather than a regular weekly event.

Family dining offers several benefits to children’s development and overall well-being. It encourages a sense of routine and structure, which can provide children with a sense of security and predictability. Regular family conversations during meals foster strong communication skills, which, in turn, aid in building open and honest relationships. French children grow up understanding that mealtimes are not just about eating; they are a social and cultural experience that promotes unity within the family.

The impact of family mealtimes on a child’s long-term mental health cannot be understated. When families prioritize communication during meals, children learn to express their thoughts and feelings, reducing the likelihood of bottling up emotions. Open conversations create a safe space where children feel comfortable discussing any topic with their parents, fostering a strong sense of trust.

The practice of sharing meals and engaging in discussions also allows parents to be more attuned to their children’s emotional well-being. They can detect signs of stress, anxiety, or other issues early on and offer support and guidance when needed. This proactive approach to addressing mental health concerns can have a lasting positive impact on children’s lives.

In a world increasingly driven by technology, the importance of traditional family mealtimes and effective communication cannot be overstated. While iPads and other devices may offer momentary convenience, they come at the cost of hindering children’s communication skills and emotional development.

Focusing on table manners and family conversations at mealtimes may seem old fashioned but these are key skills. As they say, manners cost nothing. No one wants to see elbows on the table, spoons being used for all meals, people hopping up and down from the table every minute now conversations with mouths full of good.

My children thought we were Draconian when they were little. The hard work has paid off as whilst my boys slouch and grunt rather than speak these days, they do understand the importance of conversation and table manners. We have had brilliant conversations around the table where they have felt comfortable to share things with us I never thought they would. Fostering this open dialogue is so vital for our young people.’

As we look to the future, it becomes clear that communication is a key skill that will prepare children for success and well-being. Family mealtimes, free from digital distractions, play a pivotal role in cultivating this essential skill and nurturing healthy family bonds.

What is the 7-Plus/8-Plus?

What is the 7-Plus/8-Plus?

What is the 7-plus exam?

The 7-plus is used by independent schools to admit children to their institutions on the basis of academic ability. The exam is sat by students in year 2 for entry into year 3. Students normally take the exam in January of year 2, however, some schools have their tests earlier in December. It is really important to check the school websites to confirm the dates.

What is the 8-plus exam?

The 8-plus like its sister exam is also taken by children applying for independent schools in the UK and is sat by children in year 3 for entry into year 4 the 8plus was designed for boys and the 7-plus for girls, this is because traditionally girls mature faster than there male counterparts. Assessing them later gave boys more of an opportunity to show their full potential. However, now different schools offer both 7&8 plus for both boys and girls depending on the institution.

What is its format?

The format does vary from school to school but broadly speaking the 7-plus/8-plus will include an assessment in Maths and English. Competitive schools such as the City of London Girls, have multi-stage admission processes where students have to pass an initial assessment before being able to the main 7-plus/8-plus assessment. Even though the format can vary from school to school you would expect similar to the 11-plus there to be

  • A non-calculator Maths component.
  • A comprehension.
  • A Creative writing exercise.

 What is the 7-Plus/8-Plus?

Benefits for early acceptance

The 7 & 8-plus exams have become increasingly more popular as parents realise the increased competition for places at 11-plus. Taking the exams a few years earlier ensures that their children already have places and don’t have to go through the stress or competition of the 11-plus process, and may also confer an advantage if the student has any siblings, it may become easier for them to gain acceptance to the same school.

An important aspect to note is that if you are not successful in the 7-plus, reapplying for the 8-plus is an option but parents should be wary of applying for 7-plus with a blase attitude that there is always 8-plus or 11-plus. Unsuccessful the 7-plus can be used as a trial run, there can be a lot of development in one year but this does mean the student will have to go through the exam cycle more than once which some families may find stressful.

Maths – What are schools expecting?

By the time students take the exam, they should know all of the key stage one syllabus and a significant proportion of the key stage 2 syllabus despite the fact that many students will not have reached that stage in the national curriculum at school, which means students will need to be comfortable with content that they have not actively learnt at school.

Children will need to have good mental arithmetic and be comfortable with word problems and also have a good grasp of the four number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and have a good knowledge of their times tables. If you’re not sure, a good place to start would be the Keystage 1 and Keystage 2 national curriculum.

What is the 7-Plus/8-Plus?

English – What are Schools expecting?

Similar to the expectation for maths students preparing for 7 and 8-plus should be familiar with both key stage 1 and key stage 2. Similar to 11-plus there will be a comprehension therefore students should be able to read fluently and answer comprehension questions including quotes if necessary. Along with comprehension, there will be a creative writing component. Students are expected to be able to write a composition with a definitive beginning, middle and end, using correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Is there a reasoning component?

The majority of schools do not have a reasoning component at 7 and 8 plus but for the schools that do students should be familiar with identifying patterns and codes.

Eaton Square Senior and Sixth to Transform into LPS Mayfair and LPS Sixth

Eaton Square

Eaton Square Senior School and Eaton Square Sixth Form are proud to announce their transition into London Park School Mayfair (LPS Mayfair) and London Park School Sixth (LPS Sixth), set to take effect from September 2024. This transformative step underscores the school’s commitment to personal attention, agility, creativity, experiential learning and problem-solving, aligning perfectly with the vision of the London Park Schools (LPS) group and marks a shift away from its prep school roots, highlighting its focus on senior school expertise.

London Park Schools represents a fresh perspective on secondary education, where students are at the heart of everything. Their mantra, “smaller schools for bigger thinking,” emphasises a shift from uniformity to individuality, strong relationships, collaboration, adaptability, and inclusivity, creating an environment that nurtures “bigger thinking.” In a rapidly changing world, agility is crucial, and LPS emphasises the need for adaptability in students, encouraging them to explore, question, and engage in more comprehensive and critical thinking and to learn by ‘doing’. As smaller schools, they provide the flexibility to adjust educational strategies quickly, offering the best practices from around the world and meeting the dynamic needs of students and the workforce of the future.

Each London Park School is a place where students are known by name, not just as numbers on a list. Each student’s unique journey, strengths, and needs are recognised, allowing for personalised support and guidance.

The London Park Schools’ leadership team, including Group Principal Suzie Longstaff, LPS Clapham Head Susan Brooks, and Adrian Rainbow, Head of LPS Mayfair and LPS Sixth, along with Head of Sixth Form, Nathan Mountford, pioneers a new model of collaborative education whereby each school adheres to the same manifesto, but tailors its application to the specific needs of its own student body whilst working synergistically to provide a supportive group structure, thereby offering the best of both worlds.

personalised education

The transition to LPS Mayfair and LPS Sixth will be fully implemented by September 2024, including the name change and a phased introduction of a new uniform.  It represents a statement of beliefs, values, and an innovative approach to education. The new names emphasise the schools’ commonality and community with other members of the LPS group, fostering inclusion, collaboration, and a seamless, shared journey to the sixth form across both schools.

Eaton Squarepersonalised education

Dr. Rainbow has already brought significant changes to the curriculum, fostering innovation, creativity, and improved learning outcomes. With backgrounds in elite sport, both Suzie Longstaff and Adrian Rainbow understand the value of a warm coaching culture that enables students to excel and develop essential life skills such as resilience, pride, and teamwork.

“We’re excited about this transformation as it underlines our commitment to providing the highest standards of education while offering additional resources and expertise. London Park School Mayfair and Sixth will continue to focus on student well-being, academic excellence, and a broad base of skills, just as Eaton Square Senior and Sixth already do,” said Dr. Adrian Rainbow, Head of Eaton Square Senior and Sixth (LPS Mayfair and LPS Sixth from 2024).

Suzie Longstaff, Principal of London Park Schools, concludes, “We aim to nurture thoughtful, articulate, and globally aware individuals, and this exciting transition is a testament to our unwavering dedication to empowering students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.”

1. Please introduce yourself: Name, what you do & how many children you have.

Marketa: My name is Markéta Henry and I am the founder of Luna Bespoke, a premium recruitment agency focused on sourcing specialist nannies and private staff for families both in the UK and around the world. I am also a proud mum to two incredible young children. My daughter, Alexandra, is 6 years old, and my son, Gabriel, is 3.

Kamila: I am Kamila Nevrklova, and I lead the Recruitment team at Luna Bespoke. I’m also a proud mum to two super sporty boys, Tobias (12) and Robert (10)

2. How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a mother?

Marketa: Maintaining a healthy balance between work and life is important to me, although not always easily reachable. I am lucky to have a strong support system both at home and at work, which helps me plan and manage my time effectively. By being productive during work hours, I can be more focused and present with my family when I am at home.

Kamila: I love my job, which makes everything so much easier. I’m incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support network through my family and friends. Moreover, I’ve been so lucky to have had great nannies who’ve been a tremendous help with my boys.

3. What top tips would you give to any working mum?

Marketa: It is important to acknowledge that it is not possible to handle everything alone. It is all about setting priorities and sharing tasks both at work and at home to keep a balanced workload. I find it essential to draw clear lines between my work life and personal time. This way, I can be fully present in each moment, whether it is my family or my work. Some days might not go as planned, but that’s ok!

Kamila: Ask for help! Don’t be too hard on yourself, and separate working time from your family life. When I am with my boys, the phone is off (well, most of the time) :-)”

4. What do you love most about London? Do you have a favourite spot with your children?

Marketa: I absolutely love London and its lively atmosphere! One of the things that makes me really happy is the mix of different cultures and experiences in the city. When it comes to spending quality time with the children, our favourite spots are Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens; all the playgrounds and open spaces provide hours of fun. The children particularly love the Diana Memorial Playground.

Kamila: What I love most about London is its diversity and the incredible opportunity to meet people I might never otherwise encounter. Thanks to my boys and their interests, I’ve practically become an expert on every ice skating rink and football pitch in London! Southbank is our favorite family spot.

5. How do you define quality ‘me-time’?

Marketa: Balancing being a mum to my two little ones and my busy yet rewarding job is super important to me, yet not always easy. One of my favourite things is sneaking in some ‘me-time’ in the early mornings before the house wakes up. I love wrapping myself in a cosy blanket, sitting on the sofa with a book and a fresh cup of coffee!

Kamila: Being a working mum doesn’t always leave much time for myself, but I make the most of the moments I get. Reading and hitting the gym are my favorite ways to relax. I also enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, even if my boys might not always appreciate it.

6. What is your favourite & least favourite thing about parenthood?

Marketa: The absolutely best thing about being a parent is the endless love that fills my heart each and every day. Those hugs and kisses from my children make me feel incredibly blessed and fortunate. On the other side, I find the constant worry and concern for their well-being, safety, health, and overall happiness really hard. It’s a natural part of being a mum, but sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming.

Kamila: My favorite part of parenthood is undoubtedly the company of my kids. They’re just so funny and delightful to be around! On the flip side, they can also be quite demanding and tiring, especially during different stages like setting up sleep routines, prepping for the 11+ exams, or getting them to tidy their rooms. Each phase brings its own challenges. But even with all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t change a thing for the world.

7. Tell us something people don’t know about you.

Marketa: One thing that people may not know about me is that I really enjoy playing the piano. I only started playing in my adulthood, but it quickly became a special part of my life that brings me a lot of joy.”

Kamila: I’m actually a super fast reader, and I’ve got some skills on the tennis court too. I’m a fairly decent tennis player and a huge fan of Roger Federer!

8. Given we are all about embracing Motherhood, what advice would you give a first-time Mum?

Marketa: My advice to you as a new mum is to be kind to yourself and trust your instincts. Take each day as it comes, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek advice when needed. You are your child’s greatest advocate and source of love. Cherish those precious moments, and know that you are doing an amazing job.

Kamila: Raise your kids in a way that feels right for you. Avoid comparing yourself to others, trust your instincts, and enjoy every single moment.

9. I’m a mum and…

Luna Bespoke

10. Finally, please let us know what you love most about Kensington Mums.

Marketa: The Kensington Mums is an invaluable resource for me as a parent. It is a fantastic source of information and support that I truly enjoy. What’s more, the feeling of being part of this amazing community and the chance to connect with other parents is something I really appreciate. It takes a village to raise a child!

Kamila: It’s all about bringing us together, creating a community that reminds you that you’re not alone on this parenting journey. It’s like having a big supportive family right there with you!
