Hyde Park Nursery

Sand pits and secret gardens – the joys of an outdoor education. At Hyde Park Nursery and Pre-Prep School, located North of Hyde Park near Connaught Village, they are in an incredibly fortunate position where they are able to tailor their learning environment to bring out the very best in each and every one of their students. They operate a free-flow nursery, where children have the option to spend time inside or outside throughout the day. They also encourage their pupils to decide for themselves when and how they want to utilise the indoor and outdoor space, rather than operating a rigid schedule that may not always suit their individual needs or goals. Luckily, their nursery school – aptly named The Long Garden – has vast amounts of outdoor space where they have installed a huge sand pit, butterfly gardens and vegetable patches, as well as a large grassy space for their pupils to run around in. The teachers and assistants encourage students to be out in the fresh air as much as possible. They run weekly Outdoor Adventurer sessions where the children learn to make fires, cook marshmallows, pop popcorn and burn sticks to make charcoal. They also learn about the wildlife that lives in the garden. Den building forms part of the weekly challenge lessons and the Mud Kitchen is used to make all manner of imaginary stews and magic potions!  Outdoor play – whether teacher led or not – encourages children to interact more with each other. Be it through playing games, working together on tasks or exploring new territories, we see students interacting together more than they would do in a traditional classroom setting.  Come and visit at their next open morning on Wednesday 21st March.
