having a baby

It may be unchartered territory, but you’ll make your way through! Here are the 20 things nobody tells you about having a baby!

1. Welcome to sleepless nights. You will never truly drift to sleep for long, perhaps for the next 5-6 years depending on your baby’s sleep routine.

2. Find your mama tribe to help you through the ups and downs of motherhood, as it does take a village to raise a mother (not only a child)

Tools for Solidarity | RESOLVE Collective

Summer Scoop 2023

Dates: 25 June–5 November 2023 (Tuesday–Sunday, 11 am–6 pm)
Admission fee: FREE

This summer The Mosaic Rooms is pleased to invite children, families and all to play and create in our new outdoor play commission by RESOLVE Collective.

Tools for Solidarity is a collaborative project by RESOLVE Collective that draws on workshops with participants of Earl’s Court Youth Club, local families in the Earl’s Court area, and several schools in Ramallah, Palestine.

The outdoor play installation has been shaped through these participatory workshops, learning from the young peoples’ local experiences of place and belonging, solidarity, and togetherness. Tools for Solidarity animates and activates children’s creative language through play and presents a fun, interactive and evolving play structure in The Mosaic Rooms’ Garden.

This new project will manifest in a series of interactive sculptures which harness radical play and remix recycled materials to ask young people and their families: what tools are needed in our communities to practice solidarity? Throughout the summer, the installation will grow and evolve, changing through play, as a way of exploring and supporting practices of solidarity for a variety of communities and social causes locally and internationally.

Perfect Tapas restaurant in Southbank Centre | Review

Kensington Mums reviews

In case you are looking for a Tapas restaurant in London then keep reading. Inspired by traditional Spanish recipes and flavours with a focus on the north-western corner of Galicia, enjoy La Gamba in the heart of Southbank Centre, while you dine overlooking the Thames. Perfect for sunset drinks and dinner.

About La Gamba

Brothers behind Borough Market’s eponymous Applebee’s Fish, unveil their newest project, La Gamba, a riverside tapas restaurant overlooking the glorious views of the Thames at  London’s Southbank Centre.

Situated on the Queen’s Walk at the front of the Royal Festival Hall, La Gamba serves modern takes on traditional Spanish dishes, accompanied by a list of curated cocktails and a wine list which will take you on a journey from the Douro River to the hills of Rioja.

Dine overlooking the Thames

Food and Drinks

While La Gamba takes inspiration from traditional Spanish recipes from all over the country, the menu largely showcases dishes and cooking techniques from the north-western Galician region of Spain. With around 1,500km of coastline, seafood dishes shine through the menu, as well as hearty plates, world-renowned cheeses, and delicate almond-based sweets, that the region is famous for.

The food including Spanish tapas was excellent and we were served by friendly and attentive waiters. The manager was particularly helpful regarding our allergy. We tried a variety of Tapas and the Paella was delicious. They also offer set tapas menu which has a great value. Full menu selection can be found here. You must try their Burnt basque Cheesecake!

As for drinks, La Gamba’s team of mixologists will bring their own in-house Vermouth, a variety of Sherrys and Sangrias alongside and have a dedicated Spanish gin list served in the classic goblet gin glasses.

La GambaWith interiors created by Basque Architect, Cristina Lanz Azcarate from Atelier EURA, natural undertones of terracotta, stone and oak whisks guests away to sunnier climes. The menu features fresh seafood dishes which sister restaurant Applebee’s Fish is well known for,  including St Austell Mussels cooked in a rich albariño and chorizo sauce; Cornish crab and fennel tostada; Iberico pork cheek empanadas and Galician picanha steak with truffle and San Simón cheese. Desserts will showcase the classic Burnt basque cheesecake and wonderful Torrijas, a Spanish twist on decadent French Toast.

Banana Loaf

Banana Loaf

It’s Summer fête season and many of us are helping our school’s PTAs by providing baked goods to be sold. Here at Kensington Mums, we have tried out a couple of fairly simple recipes that you might like to try out for your own school fair.

  • 2 eggs
  • 200g peeled bananas (mashed)
  • 280g plain flour
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 1tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1tsp ground cinnamon

  • 140g unsalted butter (melted)

Banana Loaf

METHOD:

  • preheat the oven to 170oC (325oF/gas 3)
  • put the sugar & egg in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a hand-held electric whisk) and beat until well incorporated
  • beat in the mashed bananas
  • add the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon & ginger to the sugar mixture
  • mix it thoroughly until all the dry ingredients have been incorporated into the egg mixture
  • pour in the melted butter and beat until all the ingredients are well-mixed
  • pour the mixture into the prepared loaf tin & smooth over with a palette knife

What to Do in July in London

July

The summer holidays are just around the corner so it’s never been more important to get acquainted with all the kid-friendly activities in and around our little corner of West London.

New Balls Please

JulyStarting with the very British passion for tennis! From 27th June to 1st July, Hurlingham plays host to the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic. This wonderful tournament celebrates timeless elegance and quintessential British traditions as the elite of the tennis world prepare for Wimbledon… which in turn begins on the 3rd July and last until the 16th July.  Even if you haven’t managed to secure yourself some seats beforehand, Wimbledon is one of the very few major sporting events where you can buy premium tickets on the day of play. 500 tickets for Centre Courts, No.1 Court and No.2 Court will be sold for each day the courts are in play. You can also get yourself a grounds pass which enables you to access all courts including No,3 Court, Court 12 and Court 18, as well as The Hill, where they screen the action from Centre and No. 1 Courts.

Outdoor Pursuits

If the weather continues to be beautiful throughout the whole of July, it’d be a crying shame not to enjoy all of the wonderful outdoor activities in London’s gardens and parks. In Gunnersbury Park they will be hosting a number of child-focused activities including an outdoor performance of The Wind in the Willows on the 19th July and of The Tale of Peter Rabbit on the 21st July. At Kew Gardens, they will be performing Alice in Wonderland from Wednesdays to Sundays, 22nd July to 28th August.

July

And if you’re interested in the horticultural, the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival will be taking place from 4th-9th July whilst on 25th July at Chelsea Physic Garden, they are hosting Discover Ferns: Plant a Dinosaur Habitat, a workshop for children ages 5 and up where each participant will learn about the properties of ferns and design their own mini dinosaur habitat to take home.

Summer Culture

Somerset House Summer Series returns in July 2023 with eleven nights of fabulous gigs within the House’s beautiful courtyard. The series presents a line-up of breakthrough music artists and established acts from across the globe. For something slightly more traditional, there is the always wonderful BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Running from 14th July all the way until 9th September, the programme showcases everything from Northern Soul to The Four Seasons. On 22nd July, the English National Opera Chorus and Orchestra will be showcasing the Horrible Histories’ ‘Orrible Opera at which children of all ages are welcome.

At Shakespeare’s Globe, they will be running  A Midsummer Night’s Dream family workshops for those aged 5-8 and 9-12 for children aged 5 to 8. The Tate Modern is hosting UNIQLO Tate Play – the gallery’s new free programme of art, activities and play for families of all ages. Taking inspiration from the art on display at Tate Modern, their free activities and events offer families new ways to get creative and playfully explore art together. Meanwhile, the Museum of the Home is hosting a Summer Party on the 1st July, inspired by the class village fêtes of old.

The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, which has run without interruption since 1769, runs from 13th June to 20th August. Among the 1,614 featured works you will find towering sculptures by the late Phyllida Barlow RA, Richard Malone’s dramatic mobile installation in the Wohl Central Hall, and a witty painting by comedian Joe Lycett.  And at the V&A they will be hosting the DIVA Exhibition which will celebrate the power and creativity of iconic performers, exploring and redefining the role of ‘diva’ and how this has been subverted or embraced over time across opera, stage, popular music, and film.

Cool off at Lalandia in Billund | Review

Lalandia

Kensington Mums had the refreshing opportunity to visit Lalandia’s Aquadome! When we say refreshing it is literally that! It is the perfect family day outing as you can spend there the whole day.

As London’s weather is getting hotter and hotter, you can literally visit Lalandia just for the day. You can hop onto a flight from Stansted airport and 1 hour and 10 min later you can simply walk 15 min or take a bus from Billund Airport that will take you to Lalandia’s entrance.

The Aquadome – a real paradise for younger and older crowds. You have all you can imagine the ultimate fun aqua park experience.

Lalandia

Upon entering you might think you are in the canals of Venice with some Italian-looking decor. They are fully equipped for you to spend hours inside their facilities. They have a supermarket and many shops that sell souvenirs all the way to all you need from swimming costumes, accessories and more. You also have activities catered to children and adults as there are millions of attractions from mini golf all the way to arcades, padel, Monkey Land, and climbing wall. and even a Winter Land.

Once you are in the tropical Aquadome you are given a wristband that you must keep on at all times as this is the way to get back to your locker and also you can use this as a payment method. So, it is very convenient as you can leave all your belongings in the lockers in the changing areas and just carry around your essentials.

They have a restaurant that caters to all palates. As they have an American, Italian and Asian-style menu as well as salads and beers and soft beverages.

Something I really liked was that it is a must to wash yourself with soap before entering the Aquadome.

Now, you are ready to start your own Aquadome adventure. I loved that it feels as they called it the tropical Aquadome. You really feel inside as if you are in the tropics; the temperature is just lovely and feels warm enough after being inside the pools.

LalandiaThey really catered to everyone; there are small pools for babies and toddlers all the way to grown-up pools.  When you are ready you can then feel the rush with the fun water slides they have. For small ones and for older ones such as the Beach Racers, Tornado slide, Double Tube, Octopus Racer, Temple, Twister, and Bunker Tube slides will keep you your high adrenaline rush.

Our favourite was the Wave Pool where you can wait to feel just as if you are in the ocean and it is accessible for all as little ones can be right at the edge of the pool for a soft wave or if you fancy a higher wave then go all the way to the front of the pool.

The Aqua Splash Playground was by far my son’s favourite where he was able to squirt water to everyone passing and just on me!

You also have access as well to an outside pool which is lovely if the weather is nice. There is also an indoor and outdoor hot pool with massage jets which are open all year long!  They also have a huge jumping pillow for the kids in the outside area.

Lalandia

You can go for a more relaxed experience and just visit the sauna. Where you can then get a cold shower and repeat and then lay down on the relaxing area they have with hammocks.

During the day and depending on when you go they offer activities geared to the whole family. We were able to attend a special aromatherapy sauna activity geared for children where they set the sauna at a perfect temperature for the little ones and use aromatherapy oils which are an absolute delight and highly recommended to attend. After you are greeted with a refreshing savoury water.

We also experienced another activity which was to be a mermaid – yes you read right. This activity happens in the outside pool and they give you the opportunity to be a mermaid for a few minutes by providing children with a mermaid tail costume that they can put on and then feel as if they are a real mermaid! A fun activity for the little ones too that we recommend.

We stayed almost a whole day and if we were not supposed to catch a flight back to London we would have stayed until closing time. As it didn’t even matter that my son’s finger looked literally as raisins all wrinkled after being in the water for hours. We just couldn’t leave the Aquadome.

So, trust us when we say either you add Lalandia to your Billund visit or you just go for the day from London you surely will create lasting unforgettable memories and will win the title of the best parent in the world as I did! Thank you Lalandia we will surely be back!

Motherhood by Madeleine Shaw

Motherhood by Madeleine Shaw

1. Please introduce yourself: Name, what you do & how many children you have

Hi, I am Madeleine Shaw, I am a nutritional therapist and have a 5-year son.

2. How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a mother?

It goes through waves, some weeks it’s easier and sometimes it’s harder. I have a great family who support me and help look after my son when I need extra support but I try and work efficiently when he is at school. I want to be around loads while my son is young so I know I won’t be able to work as much as I’d like to but this is the season I am in and I am trying to embrace it.

3. What top tips would you give to any working mum?

Do your movement first. It’s hard to get your movement in so do it first thing. I created The Glow Space for mums like me who only have 15-20 mins of time to do some movement. The platform also has meal prep plans with shopping lists which are great for prepping healthy meals to have in the fridge.

Use your commute to do emails, and keep your phone out of eyesight so you are more focused and less distracted. Know that being a mum doesn’t make you a worse worker, it makes you a better one. you gave birth and raised a child that is remarkable and you can’t take on anything!

4. What do you love most about London?  Do you have a favourite spot with your children?

That is full of lots of villages. I love Richmond Park and having lunch at Petersham Nurseries. I love going to the Tate or recently I took my son to Frameless. I grew up in London and I love the balance of nature and culture.

5. How do you define quality ‘me-time’?

Being by myself on a hike in nature, that’s when I feel calm, connected and creative.

6. What is your favourite & least favourite thing about parenthood?

My favourite thing is the deep love, purpose and connection I feel to my son. My least favourite is the lack of downtime and time with my other loved ones.

7. Tell us something people don’t know about you

I’m pretty good at hula hooping

8. Given we are all about embracing Motherhood, what advice would you give a first-time Mum?

Enjoy the season you are in, often we wish we were in past or future seasons, we cant wait until our kids are older or miss when they were younger. You won’t get this moment back to enjoy the present.

9. I’m a mum and…

Motherhood by Madeleine Shaw

10. Finally, please let us know what you love most about Kensington Mums
