Welcome to our first newsletter of February 2013. With Half-term fast approaching, a lot of you may be looking for some exciting days out and fun activities to keep children occupied during their time off school. Well, worry not! In this week’s newsletter you will find more information on what’s on this half term, from movies outing to pram walks. And don’t forget, pancake day (12th February), Chinese New Year (10th February), Valentine’s Day (14th February). Stay tuned for the Kensington Mums half term Guide.

Kensington Mums visited the the Barbican Centre mid week to experience the Random International: Rain Room which can only be described as a unique experience. Highly recommend it, only if you have the patience to wait for 2 hours in the queue. This is because there is a limited capacity of 5 people at a time in the rain room. This is a FREE event, just make sure you bring loads of food and entertainment if you are planning to go with little ones. Queue time can be up to four hours at peak times including evenings and weekends.
This wednesday 6th Feb, exclusive soft play session at Bramley’s Big Adventure for Kensington Mums, starting at 10-11am. To join us please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Price is£2 per child. Adult is FREE.
Because Mums are worth it! Kensington Mums Valentine’s Day Pamper Session. Leave your little ones with your other half and come along to an exclusive event at Neal’s Yard Remedies in Kensington on Saturday 9th of Feb from 10am-12pm. Limited places available. Session will include one to one consultation with leading expert from Neal’s Yard Remedies, topics covered will include stress and relaxation, sleep issues, detoxing, child/baby remedies, and skincare. Each Mum will receive a special goody bag, 15% of all products on the day, a choice of mini facial or mini massage. Food and nibbles will also be available. Take a well deserved time out just for you and meet other local Mums around. Price £12 per person. Expedition to the Exhibition at the Museum of Childhood. Saturday 9 February (various times). Join a pair of Victorian sisters who are setting off to visit the great exhibition of 1851. Mirror Mirror presents this interactive session which is part performance, part workshop. Enjoy a magic lantern show, learn about Victorian life, and discover the Museum’s connection with the great exhibition. This event is organized as part of national story telling week. February Half term events
February Half Term Holiday Activity Programme 2013 at Holland Park Ecology Centre. Monday 18 to Friday 22 February 2013. Sessions for 5 to 10 year olds. Time: 10am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm. £4 per session for RBKC residents; £5 non-residents. These are great for little and big ones. Click here for more information.
Family fun activities at Kensington Palace. Sat 16 – Sun 24 February 2013 from 11.00 – 16.00. The theme for the February half-term activities will be the the world of William III and Mary II in the late 17th century at Kensington Palace. Come along to make blue and white china mosaic works of art, paper tulips and learning about the exotic goods such a chocolate, coffee and tea coming in from the Dutch and British empires. February half term at the Museum of London. London’s parks are just one of the things that makes the capital a special city. Discover the archaeology hidden underneath some of our parks, hear the stories that create magic around them, make a statue fit for a London park or visit our splendid 18th century Pleasure Gardens and meet one of its famous entertainers. Ricardo Garcia’s Flamenco Flow for Kids at the Royal Albert Hall. Wednesday 20th February. Starting at 12noon and 2.30pm, Elgar Room. Stamp your feet, clap your hands and experience a taste of the Spanish sunshine on a chilly London day with Ricardo Garcia’s Flamenco Flow for Kids, who are inviting children to the Royal Albert Hall to get involved in their unique flamenco music classes. With costumes provided and dress up encouraged, this is the perfect opportunity for children to demonstrate their dance finesse and learn about the history of this popular dance whilst truly experiencing a taste of Spain. Design Through the Decades at the Geffrye Museum. Tuesday 19th February- Friday 22nd February (various times). FREE. Explore homes from a different century every day from the Tudors and Stuarts, Georgians, Victorians and finally the 20th century. Make wacky wigs, stylish silhouettes and funky fifties artworks. New Wave Kids at the V&A Museum of Childhood. Monday 18 – Friday 22 February, 10.30-16.00. FREE, drop-ins. Join Story Spinner for a creative re-telling of Shirley Hughes’s popular children’s book, “Alfie Gets in First”. Design an iconic Pac-Man Badge or a Care Bear greeting card. What’s going on here? at Tate Modern. Every weekend, 11.00 – 15.00, and Thursday 21 and Friday 22 February 2013 during half term. Drop in to the Welcome Room to pick up free new activities, display your own creation, build a plinth for a very small sculpture. Click here for more information.
Wrap up warm and enjoy a walk in Kensington Gardens and a visit to Diana Memorial Playground. Little ones can play in ‘Peter Pan’ themed playground with a huge wooden pirate ship and teepees to explore and for the kids to run around and let some steam off!
La Boutique des Pandas at the Institut français. Saturday 16 February at 2pm Sunday 17 February 2013 at 11am. Discover some of the best Chinese animated films with this selection of three elegant and tastful shorts. From the squirrel who likes unusual hairstyles to a shop owned by pandas, these original stories will enchant children of all ages. Suitable for ages 3+. Kids’ Zone at the National Army Museum. Kids Zone is great for children aged 0-8 with forest and arctic themed climbing frames for kids to scale, slide and run through. There is also a soft play area for babies, toys, and arts and crafts. It is open daily from 10.10am to 5.15pm. For only £2.50 per child this is a great way for little ones to let off some steam. Tickets for all day sessions tend to sell out before 11.00am during school holidays, so it is always best to book online to avoid disappointment. Adults go FREE.

Discover Circus at the Royal Albert Hall. Tuesday 19th February. Starting at 10.30am and 1pm, Education Room. Come and join the circus for a day for a hands-on experience exploring the history of circus at the venue. From clowns to tightrope walkers this will take the whole family on a fascinating journey through 140 years of performance history and a collection of images and artefacts from the Hall’s archives will be showcased to bring the experience alive! Children will also get the chance to get creative as they design their very own retro circus poster and create their own photographic collage for their very own circus. Imagine Family Workshops at Southbank Centre. Monday 11 February 2013 – Sunday 24 February 2013. This year’s Imagine Children’s Festival is all about the kids taking over! Southbank Centre will be transformed BY children FOR children, as well as hosting the top names in children’s literature, dance, theatre and art. Rain Room at the Barbican (until 3rd March 2013). FREE. Rain Room is a 100 square metre field of falling water for visitors to walk through and experience how it might feel to control the rain. On entering The Curve the visitor hears the sound of water and feels moisture in the air before discovering the thousands of falling droplets that respond to their presence and movement.
