I hope you all had a lovely weekend. It’s that time of the year again. Mornings are darker, days are shorter and it’s getting increasingly harder to get out of bed!
Half Term and Halloween is fast approaching. Have you got your little one’s costume ready? I am already on my hunt for the best family days out this Christmas (eeek, already?). London has so much to offer for children and their families. From museums to local parks, theatres and much more the choice is yours. In this week’s newsletter you will get the latest scoop on what’s on, including free family activities at Westfield London for the opening of the new Trotters and the opening of the new Disney floor in Harrods. Don’t forget to check out our special events and discounts. I will mention a few workshops that are running over half-term that you need to book in advance.

Thanks to everyone who came along for the Kensington Mums stay and play session at the Chelsea Theatre. It was great to meet new Mums and their little ones.
Kensington Mums Give Away. We are giving away 2 free tickets to the Baby Show in Earls Court (26-28 October 2012) once we reach 200 likes on Facebook. Get liking. Deadline midnight, 24th October. Winner will be selected at random.
Kensington Mums visited Holland Park children’s playground. The enclosed baby play area is great for little ones with swings, sands, and mini climbing frames. For the older ones there is the outdoor adventure playground which is also enclosed and has an extensive climbing equipment, zip wire, giant see-saw and tyre swing. Its a great way for kids to exercise and let off steam. Contained within the park is the beautiful Kyoto Garden, well worth a walk! You will find large areas of woodland abundant with wildlife including lovely peacocks. Finish your walk with a drink at the Holland Park Cafeteria.
Kensington Mums had a stroll in Westfield, Sheperds Bush and passed by the new Trotters store. They have a huge aquarium that kids are amazed by. To celebrate the opening of the brand new store in Westfield London, there will be story-telling and face painting to special guests and prize give aways, they have a variety of fun activities planned, so keep your diaries free! Kensington Mums visited Whole Foods Kensington and ‘Tagged’ the Community Wall with Kensington Mums loves Whole Foods Kensington. The community wall is on the 1st floor of the store, right next to the lift. When you are there next, have a look and see if you can spot the Kensington Mums art. Your kids can have a go, just bring along some pens and colours!
Kensington Mums celebrates its one year birthday! You are invited to come and celebrate Kensington Mums first year birthday on Thursday 15th November. Location, surprise. £30pp including dinner, bubbly and a vibrant atmosphere. There will be a surprise give away for everyone. To attend, please email me at email@example.com. The next first aid course will be on Wednesday 24th October at Whole Foods Market, Kensington at 63-97 Kensington High Street, London W8 5SE. Kensington Mums has teamed up First Aid for Life. The course will be thought by the Geraldine will be teaching First Aid for babies and toddlers exclusively to Kensington Mums. You will each receive a comprehensive First Aid manual and certificates can be provided if required. There will ample baby and child mannequins for you to get your hands on to practice on. The course lasts for 3 hours and covers most common childhood injuries and major illnesses. Topics includes choking and drowning as well as what to do if your child is unconscious and how to deal with burns, head injuries, fitting and bleeding. The classes cost £70 per person and partners and Daddies are welcome to attend. Time: 7-10pm. A few more places are available. To book please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Kensington Mums introduces Baby and Toddler yoga class. FREE. Friday October 26 at 11-11.45 am. Chelsea Theatre. Parent and baby/toddler yoga is the way for new
beings.This revolutionary method lays deep foundations for physical self-confidence. It also produces emotional and mental wellbeing. The result? A secure, happy and fulfilled baby, off to the best possible start in life. Alice Morgan, anthropologist and mother of three teaches parents and their babies in a series of specially adapted yoga classes inspired by cultures from around the world. This half term join Kensington Mums for a Mummy and Baby/toddler meet up. FREE. Come with your little one for a morning play time session at the Saatchi Gallery, Education Room (just off the Kings Road) on Friday 2nd November at 11am-12pm. Please get in touch and register your interest.
Back back popular demand KM Mother and Baby Outing to visit the Saatchi Gallery on Friday 23rd November 2012. Meeting outside the Saatchi Gallery at 10.30, tour starts at 11am.‘Gaiety is the Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union: Art from Russia’ is the first exhibition of contemporary Russian art at the Saatchi Gallery. This large survey show features 18 artists working in diverse ways across the mediums of painting, photography, sculpture and installation. Once tour is over you are welcome to stay and play and mingle with the group in the Education Room of the Saatchi Gallery. Toddlers will be provided with materials to get creative! There will also be a mini photoshoot session by a family photographer.£5/adult. Child free.
Kensington Mums Bootcamp will be on Saturday mornings 10-11am in Holland Park. Meeting at 9.45am at the main entrance of Holland Park (High Street Kensington entrance, facing Odeon Cinema). Classes will commence once we have enough Mums registered. In collaboration with Scandinavian Fitness, Kensington Mums will be with you so we can all get fit together! If you are like me and you want to work out and feel like you are having fun with other Mums, then I invite you to come and join in the most social form of training. Get in the best shape of your life all in the company of other Kensington Mums! Former Olympic Athlete Linda Hedenstrom will be training you in Holland Park on a Saturday starting 10-11am. Drop your kids to their activity and come and to yours or just let your other half look after your little one so you can come and work out. Halloween Family Extravaganza! Sunday, 4th November 2012 at the Chelsea Theatre (SW10 0DR) from 2-5pm. Amanda’s Action Club and Kensington Mums have combined forces to bring you a Halloween Party like no other! Come and celebrate with your whole family at our fun-filled, dance spook-tacular at the Chelsea Theatre (just off the King’s Road). A packed line-up of entertainment guarantees there’ll be something for everyone from tiny tots to teenagers and mums and dads too! Tickets cost just £10 per head (children under 1 go free!). Big Scream at the Gate Cinema. This is great for under 1s. Do you want to watch the latest movie but can’t escape as you don’t have a babysitter to look after your little one? Now you can take your baby along with you to the Gate Cinema in the heart of Notting Hill. Every Tuesday morning its the Big Scream. The next movie showing is Marnie on Tuesday 16th October at 10.30. Enjoy the movie accompanied by baby in a safe and comfortable environment. Low lights are left on in the auditorium and nappy changing facilities are available. Don’t worry if baby doesn’t settle or scream, he wont be alone. Its also a great way to meet new parents. Please note all attendees are required to join the Big Scream Club with the exception of Stratford Picturehouse, London, The Cameo and The Belmont Picturehouse.
The London Look until 30 November 2012 at the Horniman Museum and Garden. Display of finalist photographs from The London Look photography challenge, held in July 2012. The fourteen photographs capture the London look around the capital, summing up what those taking part see as the spirit of London. Participants were asked if there was a definitive ‘London Look’, to consider the varied style of Londoners, and capture the essence of the city through street photography, either spontaneous or posed. Hollywood Costumes at V&A Museum. 20 October-27 January 2013. Costume designers are storytellers, historians, social commentators and anthropologists. Movies are about people, and costume design plays a pivotal role in bringing these people to life. ‘Hollywood Costume’ illuminates the costume designer’s process in the creation of character from script to screen including the changing social and technological context in which they have worked over the last century.These galleries are filled with cinema costumes that have never left the private and archival collections in California. Most of these clothes have never been publicly displayed and have never been seen beyond the secure walls of the studio archives.Click here for more information.
Friday 19th October will see the United Kitchen Apprentices building a presence at The Scoop on the More London Estate (London bridge station, SE1 2DB) with the SOUP AT THE SCOOP event. From 12pm – 2pm next Friday 19th October the apprentices will be serving samples of the warming “Fiery sweet potato and sweetcorn soup” and giving you all the opportunity to come and find out more about the apprenticeship programme. Make sure you pop by for your free sample!
Make and Do at Camden Arts Centre. Every Sunday from 2.00 – 4.30pm, families with children can drop in to free art activities led by artist Chloe Cooper. Looking at both exhibitions, the activities focus on the iconic image of the sausage, making collages and paper weight sculptures and using interactive ways of testing out whether sculptures work best as art works or as functional objects. This is a great to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family!
Discover Sundays at the National Maritime Museum. FREE every Sunday in October at 11.30–13.30 and14.00–16.00. Be inspired by the maritime past and explore your personal connections to the sea.
Chamber Tots at Wigmore Hall for little ones on Wednesday 17th October 2012. Come along to this music workshop for toddlers and their carers. Sessions include a short performance in the Auditorium and an interactive workshop in the Bechstein Room including singing, playing percussion and a chance to meet the musicians and see their instruments close up. For children aged 2 – 5 years. £6 per child – no ticket required for accompanying adult. For 2-3 year olds starts at 10am and for For 3-5 year olds starts at 11:30am. Click here for bookings.
Pop-Up Circus at V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, 12.00-16.00. Drop-In Art Workshop: The Big Draw: Ready, Steady, Draw! Wallace Collection. Saturday 20th October, 2012.Come and say goodbye to the Great Gallery before it closes and join a team of artists led by William Riding and Anna Saunders in this great Ready Steady Big Draw-off. Inspired by the collection, your team will go head-to head on drawing challenges set by the museum. All abilities and ages are welcome to join in the fun!
Science Museum Live Shows starting 17-30 October. Propel the whole family on an exploratory adventure into the wonderful world of science this October! Explore a sci-fi film costume with V&A resident costume designer Hayley Nebauer. Participants will learn about random design, research ideas for costume design from unusual objects around the museum and create an annotated and collaged illustration of their costume and share their ideas with the rest of the group.
