Motherhood by Cecile Reinaud

How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a mother?

Running a business with two young children in the picture is no walk in the park. By nature I’m a perfectionist so when my boys were younger I used to get frustrated about not having enough time. I’ve since learnt not to beat myself up too much about not being the perfect textbook mum. My trick is to make a list of ten things I want to achieve in a day, then cross out the four least important ones and accept that they just won’t happen today.  I aim to feel 100% satisfied when I’ve reached 60% of my daily goals. With this perspective of glass half full rather than half empty I find I have more positive energy that I can redeploy to both my business and family.

What was your inspiration behind your brand: Seraphine?

Before Seraphine I worked in advertising, so I’ve always had an eye for a commercial opportunity. The idea for Seraphine came about when my friends began to fall pregnant & complained that they couldn’t find any stylish maternity clothes – back then it was all tent dresses which are so not attractive! They started coming to me with alteration requests and it all snowballed from there. I had a passion for fashion and realized there was a niche to take.

What top tips would you give to any mum on starting her own business?

Follow your dreams, but don’t be a dreamer. When you’re starting up a business it’s important to dream big, but you also have to be practical. It takes a lot of hard work, a willingness to take risks and an ability to pick yourself up and start again when things don’t go exactly to plan. But that’s what makes success so wonderful when you get there.

What is your favourite ‘hang out’ spot in London with your children?

London has so many great parks, if it’s a sunny day I love to take the boys out to play in the fresh air. My favourite is Kensington Gardens – my youngest loves the Pirate ship in the Diana memorial playground. And for a family dinner out it has to be Pizza Express – it’s my kids’ absolute favorite.

How do you define quality ‘me-time’?

My favourite way to catch a bit of me-time in the week is yoga – it keeps me toned and energized and is a great way to unwind. I also love Headspace, the daily meditation app, which makes sure that I set aside at least 10 minutes in the day for myself.

What does motherhood represent to you?

Becoming a mother has made me more passionate, not just at home but in all aspects of my life. I want to set my kids the best example I can by being the best possible version of myself.

What do you love most about London?

I’m originally from France, but I’ve made my home here in London. There are so many things I love about this city – the creative energy, the entrepreneurial spirit and the international outlook. It’s been the perfect backdrop for raising my family and growing my business.

What is the best family holiday?

I love taking my kids to visit their grandparents in Provence. My parents still live in our old family home in the South of France, which is the perfect place to spend a holiday. It’s a beautiful old chateau surrounded by Cyprus trees and olive groves, the weather is always amazing in the summer and my kids can’t get enough of the pool. As an added bonus my parents love spending time with the boys, which gives me a nice break!

Given we are all about embracing Motherhood, what advice would you give a first time Mum?

Your first pregnancy is an incredible time, and my advice is to relax and enjoy it! Spend some quality time with your partner, do things that you love to do, maybe even indulge in a babymoon getaway. I’d also say that great maternity clothes make a huge difference – comfortable, stylish, well-fitting clothes will help you to feel more confident & in control as your body changes.
