From Steam to Green at London Transport Museum

Go green with STEM-inspired family fun at London Transport Museum

Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 October 2021 – Kids go free!

Take part in interactive STEM-inspired activities and meet real-world engineers as you get curious about the future of transport this October half term at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.

Kids aged 17 and under go free to the museum and adult tickets offer free daytime entry for a year. The activities are part of the museum’s new Climate Crossroads programme, which aims to get people thinking about a greener future for the Capital.

A self-guided trail around the galleries will take you on a journey through more than 200 years of London’s history. Discover how engineering innovations and changing transport technology have shaped the city’s environment. Learn about the invention of the first man-powered sedan chair to steam-powered Underground trains and electric trolleybuses.

With new ‘green’ buses helping us to get around the city today, have you ever wondered what makes them go?

A fun hands-on activity will get children exploring how this technology works with the chance to talk to real-world engineers. A take-home activity will get kids putting their imaginations to the test as they think up their own solutions to help people make greener journeys too.

You can also discover more about the wildlife who make their homes in London’s parks, railway tracks and green spaces. Draw the animals you spot ‘living’ amongst the historic vehicles on display and see your creations added to a new collaborative installation celebrating life in the Capital.

Storytelling sessions for little ones will also run five times each day. Join Yemi and his bus-driver dad on a journey across London as this adventurous pair learn about small steps we can take to go green.

London Transport Museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00. Activities run from 10:00 to 16:00.

The Museum’s Climate Crossroads programme is supported by Mott MacDonald, Cubic Transportation Systems and Sopra Steria. It features school holiday family activities, After Dark events, thought leadership debates for business leaders and skills and employability support for young people.
