10 easy DIY home hacks for busy mums

home hacks

Current mum duties are significantly demanding these days especially during lockdown, when we have no time for ourselves and struggle to juggle, work, keeping a home and family, homeschooling and time. What can help are some home hacks to help us achieve what we need to but maybe with a shortcut or easier route.

1. Prepare weekly food menu and shopping in advance

At the moment we may need to think about this anyway due to being able to get online shopping slots. So creating a menu for weekly meals and knowing ingredients we will need in advance will give us what we need to be organised and prepared.

2. Organise weekly online food shopping in advance

As above slots are hard to come by so we need to be organised ahead and try and book our slot as far in advance as possible so we know our core items will be delivered.

3. Keep a family calendar

Keep everyone organised and know how to prepare for the next day with a calendar that the whole family can use.

4. Give your kids chores to do to help out for pocket money

This is a great way to get yourself an extra pair of hands, while teaching your children the meaning of pocket money and how they can earn it and save up for what they want by helping around the house, agree a set fee to begin with on each task.

5. Lay out everyone’s clothes in the evening

Lay out everyone’s clothes in the evening for the next day to save everyone looking for their things even your own! This means everyone’s up and ready to go for the day and there are no arguments in the morning about what to wear and why, even if your own clothes are just a tracksuit at the moment have it ready so you can just get up and dressed and begin the day. Maybe in the winter lay the children’s clothes on a radiator so they can get into something warm in the morning.

6. Turn clocks forward 10 minutes

If your kids are old enough to tell the time, turn clocks forward 10 minutes. giving yourself a bit of extra time they don’t need to know about, little white lies and all that.. you won’t be rushing around like a mad woman.

7. Make pack lunch the night before

Make pack lunch the night before to save the rush and lay out breakfast items for the next morning so the kids can maybe help themselves without waiting for you, maybe even create their own breakfast corner with everything to hand, so they learn how to give themselves breakfast and that will give you at least an extra half hour in the morning.

8. Get yourself a clean wipe mat to put under their high chair/chair

If you have younger kids, get yourself a clean wipe mat to put under their high chair/chair so you can just pick it up when they are finished and shake/wipe the food mess off. Saves you needing to clean the floor every day.

9. Invest in a coffee maker

For the coffee lovers and those that need it to just wake up and function, invest in a coffee maker. Life-changing…

10. Organise the school work the night before

To help with homeschooling organisation, if you get the materials, print them off the night before and designate a folder or a shoebox to each child with all they will need for their learning. (and perhaps position the coffee machine nearby for you)
