In Years 7 and 8, Brighton College Prep Kensington pupils experience the challenging and creative Brighton College curriculum, delivered by specialist teachers, but with a London twist!
Teaching staff bring a deep subject knowledge into the classroom and a love for their subject which captivates pupils. Whether it is understanding the nuances of Shakespeare or solving a linear equation in algebra, children will return home each day inspired and asking questions about the world around them.
Although the examination preparation that takes place in Years 7 and 8 is part of the journey towards successful GCSE results, Brighton College Prep Kensington strongly believes that a child’s education is much more than just assessments, with a broad and exciting educational experience on offer.
Languages
In a global community like London, languages and cultural education are important, and pupils in Years 7 and 8 choose to extend their language learning in French, Spanish, Latin or Mandarin.
Story of Our Land
As part of the unique Brighton education, pupils learn about Britain from the beginning of time, in an interdisciplinary course that enables pupils to think about how the humanities relate to each other. Spanning history, geography, philosophy, politics and religion, this course allows pupils to develop a coherent narrative of how the past has shaped the country we live in today.
Home Economics and Lifetime Health
Through an innovative Year 7 and 8 HEALTH programme, pupils learn how to look after their minds and bodies. Pupils learn culinary skills, investigate nutrition, are introduced to the benefits of a healthy diet, and much more.
Outdoor Education
Year 7 and 8 pupils have the opportunity to explore natural environments and hone practical skills in Outdoor Education. These lessons take place in their 2-acre secret garden, in iconic London parks and further afield. By the end of Year 8, all pupils will have achieved their Brighton College Prep Kensington Wild and Wonderful passport.
London is our Classroom
Being in the heart of Kensington, just off Exhibition Road, pupils can discover the latest exhibits at world renowned museums such as the Science Museum, the V&A and the Natural History Museum all as part of their curriculum. PE lessons take place in venues such as Hyde Park and at Imperial College’s university-standard sports facilities next door.
Super Curriculum
The Super Curriculum is designed to help pupils develop their entrepreneurial spirit, research and presentation skills, and their awareness to give back to the community.
Pastoral Care
A high level of pastoral care ensures that children are encouraged to respect one another’s differences in a warm and open-minded environment. Each pupil has a pastoral tutor, appointed specifically for their ability to work with 11 to 12-year-olds. This tutor delivers the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education, helping children understand how to stay safe, healthy and prepared for life beyond school.
Contributing to School Life
Building on the independence fostered in Years 5 and 6, pupils in Years 7 and 8 are encouraged to take on positions of responsibility in all aspects of school life: boys and girls mentor younger pupils, initiate charity activities and assist in the leading of clubs and activities.
Beyond Brighton
Years 7 and 8 are vital transition years, and Brighton College Prep Kensington pupils will leave with the skills needed for a seamless and confident move into the next stage of their education. Teachers and senior staff guide both parents and pupils through any entrance requirements and at the end of Year 8, leavers will move on to Brighton College and other outstanding senior schools throughout the country.
