learn to swim

What’s the most important life-skill you can teach your child? It’s a form of survival, an Olympic sport and can lead you on to a lifetime of enjoyment not only of swimming but other sports such as rowing and sailing. You absolutely must be a strong swimmer to enjoy the sea, lakes and pools –   and all of this must be mastered by the age of 11 years, according to Swimming Nature.

Eduardo Ferre, Founded Swimming Nature over 25 years ago when he saw how amateurly swimming was taught in the UK. He went on to professionalise the teaching of swimming and currently employs around 120 swimming teachers who teach the Swimming Nature method, throughout the UK.

  1. What is the Swimming Nature difference?

All our teachers are trained in the methods and techniques developed over the last 25 years that enable teachers to teach and communicate a progressive method, encouraging the swimmer to love their swimming lessons and become technically excellent swimmers. They will learn how to swim the four strokes in a sequence and by age 8-9 years they are good enough to join London swimming clubs if they wish to.

  1. What makes a Swimming Nature lesson?

It’s so important when you take a young child to after-school classes that they feel totally at ease with the surroundings. That goes for the parents and carers too as they are trusting us with their most precious possession. Children are in a maximum group size of two per teacher, meaning we can give expert instruction, let the lesson develop at the pace of the child and ensure the practices are performed correctly. Just as you would in a PT lesson – you want the instructor to correct you and ensure the practice is perfect. Every class will consist of a greeting, a warm up, the core module and methodology and a contrasting activity to supplement the lesson. So if we are teaching underwater breathing – the contrasting activity might be picking up shells from the bottom of the pool!

  1. Where are you clubs?

We teach in some amazing pools in and around London and we’re opening a few new one’s soon both in West and North West London. Our flagship club, The Maqam in Queen’s Park is a luxury family club with a swimming pool, children’s classes, birthday parties, events, workshops and a café. Our aim is to teach everyone to swim beautifully so we have a long way to go and many more clubs planned.

  1. When is the right time to start swimming lessons?

Really learning to swim is an activity that can lead into a love of not only swimming but any sport.  Lifestyle choices such as exercise and healthy eating really start from a very young age.We recommend starting lessons from the age of three, once your child is able to happily engage with other adults and is inquisitive about learning new things.

It’s easier to learn movements in a body of water, due to gravity and quite honestly children love the freedom of being in the water and moving through it – it is quite unlike anything else. What we do recommend is you tackle learning to swim off curriculum as schools in London generally do not have the resources or time to teach it. Nowadays if you have not started to learn to swim by the age of six you are already late learning. Children can swim front and back crawl from around the age of four with correct timing and beautiful strokes.

  1. Which Water Animal Level?

We have seven stages all linked to our curriculum. The water animal levels are an engaging way for children to link swimming, environment and ecology. During the levels the children are actually mimicking what the creatures do in the wild. So a Seal, our second level will be learning to float, balance and flip from front to back – water circus skills, so to speak! Check out which water animal level you are here
