The story of a foreign family in Kensington.
When we moved to England my oldest son had just started talking. I did not know how to deal with bilingualism, so I did some research. I did not think he had some delays with speaking, compared to other children of his age, I was certainly fascinated with how quickly he could learn new words!
When he started to attend the nursery, I heard him pronounce new words in a short time and even create a few sentences. The ease with which young children can learn a new language is amazing, I read several things about it, and I can only confirm: it is a natural process, children are sponges and absorb everything in the first years of life. They have curious minds just waiting to be stimulated.
Raising children bilingual brings many advantages, I find that speaking two or more languages is a great gift for them. We live in a globalized world where the knowledge of a second language is fundamental. There are also several studies that associate bilingualism as a cognitive advantage: better problem-solving skills, ability to manage multiple things simultaneously, control of attention and emotional development. About this, we recommend reading a recent article appeared in The Times. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that bilingual children who speak English as a second language perform better than British natives during all school years. In short, bilingual children have an extra gear!
When you decide to go with bilingualism, it’s very important to be consistent and pay attention to exposure times. In fact, our children could grow up talking, understanding and reading two languages, but not being able to write one of the languages as well as the other or have some grammar gaps.
This is why choosing a bilingual school like SIAL can make the difference.
Because SIAL is a bicurricular and bicultural school fully recognised by the English and Italian Government for children aged 3 to 13.
SIAL is a school which integrates the Italian Curriculum, internationally recognised as the great strength of the Italian school system, with the best aspects of the British education system. Students at SIAL benefit from a wider and more complete education which combines Italian and British cultures, the values of which prepare them to deal with the complexities of the world in which they live.
