With the recent focus on the environmental impact of fast fashion brought to our attention by Stacey Dooley Investigates we all need to be more aware of where our clothes come from. Thankfully there are plenty of childrenswear manufacturers who have built their brands based on sustainable and ethical manufacturing and now thanks to Rosie and Cooey you can find some of the best brands all in one place.

Rosie & Cooey are a brand new childrenswear online retailer who only stock brands which meet their strict criteria around sustainable manufacturing and fair treatment of employees. All the cotton products available in their store are made using certified organic cotton, and all polyester products are made using recycled plastic. They have a fantastic selection of brands sourced from all over Europe, including Lea & Jojo, Mimi & Bart, CarlijnQ, Nadadelazos, The Bonnie Mob, Tootsa Macginty, Mainio, Dadamora, individual, Tao & Friends, Raspberry Republic, Fred’s World, Smafolk.

The owners Antonette and Chris strongly believe that to reduce waste we all need to buy better, buy less, and pass it on which is why when choosing clothes to sell in their online shop, they look for high-quality clothes with longevity in mind and garments that have the potential to be handed down to siblings. The designs tend to be more gender neutral than normally found on the high street which means passing between boys and girls is no problem at all.

Rosie & Cooey’s eco-credentials don’t stop there, they only use packaging that is fully recyclable or bio-degradable, even the packaging tape is 100% bio-degradable.

Instead of sending orders packed in the plastic garment bags they re-wrap in recycled tissue and take on the responsibility for recycling the plastic bags themselves.

With the exception of a small paper sticker they do not use fancy, printed cardboard boxes either and have made a conscious decision that instead of spending the money on having their packaging printed with their logo, Rosie & Cooey will be donating a fixed amount of £0.50 per item sold to their chosen charity instead. Rosie & Cooey are a proud supporter of WE charity.

The idea to start the business came from their own experience in trying to find good quality ethically made clothes for their two daughters, Rosie and Ailsa. Chris and Antonette wanted their girls to grow up with certain values as they believe that sustainability isn’t just for adults. They want their girls to one day think about the consequences of their purchases and how these purchases affect them, other people, and the environment.

It is also after their two daughters they decided to name their business. Ailsa has been nicknamed Cooey ever since she was a newborn as she always cooed happily. Her Mum made up a cooey song especially for her. Since then, the nickname Cooey caught on and Ailsa has been called Cooey ever since.

Having young children often means you don’t have enough hours in the day, and online shopping makes buying clothes easier, the downside is you don’t get to see or feel the clothes in person, which is why Rosie & Cooey offer free returns with a no-quibble 30 day money back guarantee should you change your mind.
