Review of Theo Simple Italian in Kensington

Kensington Quarter Cafe, Bar, Restaurant, 34-44 Barkston Gardens, London SW5 0EW

It was a pleasure to be invited by Theo Simple Italian restaurant in Kensington for a lovely diner for two on a refreshing spring evening. As you enter Theo Randall ‘casual dining’ restaurant you can’t help but notice the light and bright restaurant interior which caught our attention.

Located conveniently between Earls Court and Gloucester Road tubes stations, the main entrance of the restaurant is through  Hotel Indigo® London Kensington – Earl’s Court. You’ll fall in love with Theo Simple’s Italian the minute you set foot inside their inviting dining rooms, providing a sense of intimacy whilst lending itself to a buzzing atmosphere. A rich wooden bar separate the front room from a cozier rear dining room where we seated. The restaurant also features an Italian deli selling seasonal produce, fine ingredients and artisan products.

A fireplace, modern decor and separate lounge area add to the feel-good ambiance. We were greeted by the manager upon arrival who guided us to our table. Chef Theo Randall offers rustic Italian dishes using fresh ingredients, with a list of enticing options on a menu artfully designed to cater to many palates. We couldn’t wait to try it out!

The menu is a carefully considered selection of dishes to suit different occasions. Cicchetti (for those after a quick, light bite with an Italian craft beer) include grilled Bramata polenta with smashed salt cod and red anchovies; and classic bruschetta with vibrant roasted Datterini tomatoes, fresh marjoram and new season olive oil. Larger anti pasti (perfect for sharing), primi and secondi dishes follow, such as Carne Salata – a fresh rocket salad with melt in the mouth cured beef fillet, aged balsamic vinegar and parmesan and indulgent Tuscan gnudi with parmesan, sage and noisette butter. There is also a choice of classic, comforting pasta dishes like pappardelle con ragu di coda di bue – fresh pasta with slow cooked oxtail ragu and red wine. Theo Simple’s Italian also offers lots of delicious vegetarian options too.

The mood was very pleasant and the staff always on point to cater for our needs, explaining each dish before we made our menu of choice.

What we had

We shared the delicious Veal Milanese and thought that portions were more than generous. This was served with Ruccola, and potatoes. We ordered a side of extra pasta on the side.
For dessert, we had the chocolate mille foglie with wild berries sauce, and it was exquisite as well as a Lemon Tart which was one of Theo’s signature dishes.
Diner at Theo’s Simple Italian was truly a delightful experience enjoy with family and friends.
