Kensington Mums reviews

Korean Grill Kensington*****

Sizzle on down to KGK, the first and only Korean grill in the Kensington area. KGK is the only restaurant in London to offer a Omakase dining experience. Omakase literally means ‘I leave it up to you,’ diners leave it up to the chef to select and serve seasonal specialities.

What to expect?

Are you new to Korean food? Get ready to flip meats on a grill, drink Korean traditional vodka soju and enjoy seasonal Korean milkshake for dessert. KGK has compiled everything you need to know about savouring a traditional Korean BBQ experience and Kensington Mums is taking you an experience as we review this as a family dinner in Kensington.

We loved the fact that the chef was in charge of everything. All we needed to do was to place our order and embrace our inner MasterChef and get ready to grill! The kids loved it too, but please make sure they are supervised at all times.

KGK offers a journey into Korean dining BBQ culture.

KGK King Kalbi is a signature dish, diamond cut beef short rib marinated in KGKs signature sauce, ready to be grilled. Each table at KGK has an inbuilt tabletop style grill for a traditional Korean BBQ cuisine of grilling meat over a hot grill in the centre of the table. Diners will be provided with wooden/metal chopsticks to grill, and a good tip is only to flip the meat once for a good texture of meat. We also tried out Bulgogi which literally means “fire meat,” a traditional Korean meal; thinly sliced strips of beef, sirloin, prime rib or brisket served with tantalizing marinade, oyster mushrooms and onions to be grilled together. Non marinated yummy Japanese Wagyu rib eye steak is on the menu to grill as well as whole tiger prawns and seasonal vegetables for non- meat options. Please note that all meat is also Halal.

KGK’s menu explores traditional Korean dishes throughout from the appetisers, try out Yukhoe, Korean Beef Tartare, aromatically flavoured with sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and Korean pear served with an egg yolk on top. A La Carte main dishes include pork belly Su-yuk with ssamjang, the grilled pork belly is an extremely popular Korean dish. If you have space for more, you can savour soybean ice cream or lychee sake milkshake for dessert.

Journey through Korean dining culture

Korean culture loves side dishes known as Banchan, plenty of side dishes are considered a way to season and flavour throughout the meal. Traditional Korean cabbage, Pajeoli a traditional Korean salad and seasonal namul a vegetarian side can all be experienced.

Special events

Savouring a Korean meal is more of a fun group outing, while some food can easily be enjoyed as a solo meal. The chef’s Omakase experience is a great fun night out of stag do’s, work events and family get togethers. A traditional Korean meal is fun with a group or people all preparing the food, grilling meats, side dishes and dealing with marinades. As The Korean Guide notes, Korean barbecue is more than just a meal, and sharing it with friends and family is part of the package. To be able to taste the variety of marinades, meats, and side dishes, you’re going to want to share with a group of hungry people.

KGK will be offering lunchtime set menus between £22-25; Korean salads, a choice of Bulgogi (marinated beef), Shrimps, rice/soup and seasonal dessert like Soybean ice-cream to enjoy with friends. A vegan menu that is reminiscent of a day at a Buddhist temple and will include hot stone rice dishes. The evening menu A La Carte comes in at around £65.00 per head and the pièce de résistance the Chef’s Omakase experience.

More fun

If you want to follow the whole Korean culture fully, you might head to a karaoke bar to belt out some tunes, Korean culture loves karaoke, and you never know a karaoke room may be popping up at KGK soon…watch this space!
