‘If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.’ – Thomas Edison

I open my ‘Dream Big’ student assembly with Edison’s quotation and have always found it important to emphasise to students that they have so much potential and achieve so much with the right attitude and approach to learning. It is also my job as the head of Eaton Square Senior School & Sixth Form to ensure that we are providing our young people with knowledge, skills and experience rich curriculum to thrive and reach their highest potential.

I have recently become addicted to a podcast called High Performance: Lessons from the Best on Becoming Your Best which focuses on high performers, their journey to success, and what advice they can provide others to achieve. Inspired by each of the podcasts, I questioned just how much our curriculum empowers agency in our young people at Eaton Square Senior School & Sixth Form. One of the standard questions asked of the interviewee is what advice they would give their teenage self if they could go back in time. This made me think about how epiphanies can happen at a young age and one does not need to persevere for years and years before developing the tools to succeed, gain confidence and unlock personal potential.

What can we as educators learn from our leading entrepreneurs, athletes, and creative innovators? What can they teach us about mind management, resilience and reacting to setbacks, taking responsibility, and cultivating self-leadership? The lessons provided from the podcast have led me to focus not just on pedagogy, exam success and university destinations, but also on building a coaching culture where our teachers, in the same way as coaches, build a high performance culture to ensure young people realise their capabilities to propel them towards success. This means creating high performance mindsets and habits to achieve success which enable our students to be masters of their own plan and destiny. It means providing our students with a roadmap for self-efficacy, for them to really know what they want in life and how to get there.
