Please introduce yourself: Name, what do you do & how many children you have.
My name is Rod McKenzie of Modern Dad Pages. I am a self-employed stay at home dad with 3 children Ryley my eldest (18), Logen (16) and Olivia (7). Now I know self-employed is very vague, but I do many things to bring in money and the largest part of that money would come from selling poles as in street light and traffic poles. Recently I have opened a little online shop called nineteen8one.com and I do some social media work for local companies. So yes I have a very varied work life.
How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a father?
I am fortunate enough to have been able to build a business working from home on my own terms which allows me to schedule my days in such a way that I can be there for my kids. This has made my balancing act so much easier.
What makes you, as a dad, happy?
My kid’s smiles and those moments when they are all getting along and having a ridiculous conversation. I can honestly say there are moments like that make me feel so much happiness I well up.
What is your favourite & least favourite thing about parenthood?
My favourite part of parenthood is when I have those glimpses when I know I am raising good people and my least favourite is the refereeing between them! They are siblings and can fight like cats and dogs at times lol!
If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
Woody from toy story
I’m a dad and……?
Tell us something mummy doesn’t know, something that happened during a ‘dad on duty’ moment.
To be honest there is probably a lot! As I am the main caregiver a lot happens that’s forgotten about!
What does fatherhood represent to you? Please describe in few words what fatherhood means to you or has made out of you.
Being a dad has simply made me a better person.
What advice would you give a first-time dad?
Don’t stress yourself out so much about becoming a dad and enjoy being one! You will soon realize it’s not that hard if you just listen to yourself.
Share a top tip with your fellow dads?
Don’t ignore your kids for anything. If they come to you because they have a funny story or whatever they have on their little minds take that moment to stop and listen because those are the moments you will always remember.
