Growing out of the pandemic

It’s been quite a journey since Oppidan launched online content in the spring of 2020. When the pandemic hit it was no longer always possible to keep mentoring face to face. Kids, however, were desperately missing the community and social interaction that is the bedrock of education and growing up. Oppidan, like most other businesses, was forced online and what we discovered was really exciting. ‘BrainLabs’ were interactive online group sessions, delivered by our best mentors, on topics kids wished they’d learnt at school. But the system was unpredictable, zoom links were pesky and although kids loved the sessions we were determined to come up with a more bespoke and integrated system.

Therefore, on the back of having delivered over 10,000 sessions in the past year, we created Disco (Latin for ‘I learn) a bespoke online learning platform for extracurricular content where learners come first. What this means in practice is that we have set out to build a community where kids are in charge: where they can choose sessions, dictate the content they enjoy, see their progress, interact with other learners and be part of a holistic journey that champions Oppidan’s key values- ownership and curiosity.

 

So, what is Disco?

Disco is our new after-school club for extra-curricular learning. Our discos, held after school and on weekends, are interactive live sessions. They help young people to understand themselves, their future and the world around them with ever-changing content that fills in the blanks left by school. From ‘Interview technique’ to ‘Scriptwriting’, ‘Young Enterprise’ to ‘The Sports Series’ – no matter what your child’s interest there will be something for them. All of our discos are led by our rockstar team of mentors: extraordinary young people with diverse professional lives. Moreover, our content is created and led by trained mentors who fundamentally believe in character education.

Our approach is energetic with a central promise – “never boring”. Above all, Disco is a community that has been designed to evolve and change with direct feedback from parents and kids.  We will listen carefully to our users and build a platform that works for them.

Development on Disco

There is a shared feeling that education should go beyond the narrow confines of exam preparation to help a child feel, amongst other things, a greater sense of self-worth and confidence.

At Oppidan, and now through Disco, we’re interested in igniting the curiosity of children with topics they don’t get taught at school.  The benefits of this approach for kids are multiple: increased ownership in their intellectual journey, enhanced curiosity, development of research skills that promote a ‘well stocked’ mind and the strengthening of emotional and intellectual character. This final point is at the core of all we do at Oppidan.

Disco is our brand-new online learning platform that delivers interactive live sessions after school and on weekends on a wide range of topics.
