This year, Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in a four-day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.
The Jubilee bank holiday is an opportunity for our borough’s communities to come together to celebrate this historic milestone and Kensington and Chelsea Council are helping you do it as locally as possible.
NEW SQUARE UNVEILED AT KENSINGTON TOWN HALL – Wednesday 26 May
To kick-off Jubilee June, Mayor Cllr Gerard Hargreaves will officially open a new community space to the public at the end of May. The area can now be hired by local groups, with some community members already keen to book the space in the warmer months. The opening of the space is part of Kensington and Chelsea Council’s aim to increase accessibility and create more spaces for residents and locals.
Come along to the event from 10.30am-11.30am, and enjoy a raffle, light refreshments and a cake sale, as well as the unveiling of the square’s new name.
COMMUNITY PARTIES – Queen’s Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend
Over the extended bank holiday in June, 31 street parties will take place across Kensington and Chelsea with support from the Council. Residents have been supported by officers in their party planning, to make sure street decorations are safe and festive to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 70-year reign together. Look out for local promotion of your nearest street party.
Tea for the Queen, Sunday 5 June
The Kensington and Chelsea Over 50s Forum, is working with the Council to organise a community luncheon, themed as an indoors street party for our older residents who may be socially isolated, bereaved, lonely or housebound. They’ll receive goodie bags and a magazine memento of this once in a lifetime celebration.
We need you! If you or anyone you know, would like to join the fun and volunteer at the event, preparation will start on Friday 3 June with decorating the Town Hall. Alternatively, you can bake a cake, biscuits or small savoury items that can be served to the guests, or if you would like to lend a hand and volunteer at the event, please call 020 3719 4954 or email us.
