Dressing for Breastfeeding? Here’s our five top tips.

Being a new mum can be tough. Your body is going through changes and you’re recovering from one of the most amazing events in your life (it’s not called labour for nothing). And to top it off, you’re suddenly responsible for this tiny little human.

Whether you choose to feed your new baby by bottle, or breastfeeding is down to personal choice. And both are fantastic options. But if you choose breastfeeding, one of the choices you have to make is what to wear. Part of being successful is making the right choices, so whether this is your first time, or you’re looking for a little more flexibility in your choices (especially during our third national lockdown), we have some options for you.

We’ve created our top five tips for dressing while breastfeeding.

  1. Choose comfortable clothes

Although it might seem an obvious point, it’s important to choose comfortable clothing. Your body has gone through a huge transformation during delivery, and you have to get used to feeling and looking different. So, make sure you choose clothes that are comfortable to wear – so choose styles that are loose fitting and will offer you gentle support without being too constrictive. Maternity wear from Bocan Couture is stylish and comfortable, it’s made of the highest quality materials such as silk or cotton, to make sure that they won’t irritate your skin.

  1. Invest in a comfortable nursing bra

A nursing bra is a foundation for every nursing wardrobe. A regular bra will get pulled out shape and lose any support they were offering. Nursing bras have special snaps and hooks that make it easy to breastfeed your baby at any time and any place by supporting a section of fabric that will fold down without it impacting the support of the bra.

There are many different options on the market, and it’s important to find one that is right for you. They come in a host of bright colours and different fits to make them super comfortable and easier to breastfeed.  The underlying material is also soft to give the right support for your body. So that you can feel more comfortable in your bra when you go outside.

  1. Plan ahead for your baby shower. Or even just getting out to meet other mums! 😊

Although, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic right now, it doesn’t mean to say that you can’t plan what you’re wearing for your baby shower. You’ll look great in silk or chiffon. So why not plan ahead for when you can invite your friends around for a party to celebrate such a huge occasion. Consider a wrap dress as your new best friend. These give you more flexibility when you’re nursing. Add lightweight tank or vest underneath to feel a little less exposed.

And what about if you’re staying in? A long lightweight robe is the perfect choice! They will make you feel special whilst offering comfort and style

  1. Staying in, is the new going out.

They also make it easy to breastfeed, just like a buttoned shirts and dress would. Bocan Couture pyjamas use buttons for just this reason. Soft fabrics and practical solutions. What’s not to love!

  1. And finally, if in doubt. Add a Scarf!

A scarf is versatile, as well as being functional and stylish. While nursing your baby, you can use the scarf as a cover, and other times, just wrap it around your neck to give a stylish look. Scarves are a mainstay in fashion, so you’re sure to look great in it. Consider picking scarves that are made of thin fabrics, so you don’t feel too heavy while wrapping it around your neck.

Breastfeeding can be a great experience and you don’t have to feel shy doing it in the public, especially when you wear clothes that are not just comfortable for you, but also conducive for nursing. Above all else, if you are comfortable, then your baby will be too. And it makes the whole process, just a little bit easier.
