School of Creative Thinker

Kensington Mums reviews

The Museum of Architecture has set up the School of Creative Thinkers in Kensington which is aimed at inspiring the next generation of architects, engineers and designers.
School of Creative Thinkers runs throughout the summer as well as Saturdays during term time and over the autumn half term holidays. Kensington Mums were lucky enough to be invited along to try it out – this is what we thought…

Location

The summer workshops are held outdoors at the Growing Space, Christ Church in Kensington. The space is fantastic – an unexpected secret teaching garden half way down an idyllic mews street in the centre of our urban jungle.

What is it all about?

The sessions aim to teach children about problem solving, design skills and innovation. The Nature’s Architects session we attended was inspired by the hermit crab. Our teacher Morvi gave us an introduction about how hermit crabs use items for housing and how architects often recycle materials and use them in the design of structures, such as the bedsprings that were used to create a pavilion for the Dubai Design Week.
The children were encouraged to imagine their own dream homes and we all donned our safety hats and worked as a team to create a structure made out of hula hoops.

My son worked together with another boy to create the base – they decided to use an igloo for inspiration while another group worked on a steeple based on the steeple of Christ Church. Before long, our structure was complete and the children loved learning about sustainability and reusing existing materials to create new objects.

The children were then given a range of materials from which they could create their own
architectural structures. They chose images of people to help them create their models to scale. I was surprised at how imaginative even the youngest children were and how impressive their models were. They each gave a presentation about their creations and it was clear that they had really thought about what they were making and had been inspired by the nature around them. My son can often have a short attention span, so I was amazed at how engaged he was, totally immersed in the task at hand. He was delighted with his train station and he demonstrated design skills I didn’t know he had! He is already asking me when we can go back for another session.

What to expect

Each hands-on session has a different theme – no two are alike. From Natures Architects (each day inspired by a different animal), to sessions where children create their own woodland creatures, to sessions inspired by birds and bugs – there is something to inspire every creative mind.
