Fatherhood by Christian Hughes

Please introduce yourself: Name, what do you do & how many children you have.

I’m Christian Hughes, I’m married to Amalie and have 3 kids – Josh (6) Poppy (5) and Molly (1)  I’m the Co-founder of Toddler Fun Learning, I vlog about being a dad on YouTube channel How2beadad and I run production company Curly Productions.

How do you manage to juggle work and life balance as a father?

It has been a real challenge to juggle my work/life balance.  When Josh was born 6 years ago I was working long hours running a production company.  I big turning point in my life was reading “The 4 Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris.  It really helped me see smarter ways of working whilst maintaining or increasing the family income.  I set up Toddler Fun Learning in 2013 for a number of reasons:  to create quality, educational content for my own children to watch,  but also to find a way to start creating a recurring revenue stream without constantly chasing the next client or job.  I’m now in the fortunate position to be more flexible with my time, choosing to work from home certain days, and always making sure I’m around for bathtimes, weekends and holidays.

What makes you, as a dad, happy?

Happiness is one of those perfect days when everyone in the family is 100% on form and we do something simple but special, such as going to the forest and all building a den, going out for lunch (where the kids behave themselves!) and then all snuggling under a duvet for family film night.

What is your favourite & least favourite thing about parenthood?

My least favourite thing about parenthood is repeating myself over and over again.  I hate hearing myself sound like a parrot, but I do get sick of asking the kids to do regular everyday things about 15 times!

My favourite thing about parenthood is seeing the kids learning and growing in confidence.  They seem to change every single day but watching and helping them learn to read, learn a new skill makes you incredibly proud.

If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?

I’d probably be Gecko from our Toddler Fun Learning series Gecko’s Garage because I do the voice!

Tell us something mummy doesn’t know, something that happened during a ‘dad on duty’ moment.

I once caught a poo when I let one of the toddlers loose on our bed without a nappy.  It was a diving catch!

I’m a dad and……?

What advice would you give a first-time dad?

Try and do some time alone with your little one as soon as you can- take the plunge, you’ll be absolutely fine and the more you do it, the bigger the bond you get with them.  It also gives Mum a well deserved rest.

What does fatherhood represent to you?

Fatherhood is the most important, rewarding and satisfying life adventure you can possibly have.

Share a top tip with your fellow dads?

Music makes your house a happier place.  Whenever I come home from work, I’ll stick Spotify on and we might all have a boogie around the kitchen – I always try and have some sort of music on.  I take great pleasure in introducing the kids to new (but old) things – listening to Bowie, the Beatles and even Abba!  This has definitely rubbed off on Poppy and for her birthday she got her first record player with her own set of records.
