Club Med Punta Cana | Travel Review

The Club Med Way of Life
As a teenager I used to travel to Club Med resorts with my parents. Since having a child of my own I have once again started visiting Club Med for an annual family holiday. My personal favourite Club Med resort in terms of value for money and activities on offer is Club Med Punta Cana. In my mind the upscale all inclusive offering on this idyllic Caribbean island provides a perfect family holiday and surprisingly affordable thanks to reasonably priced British Airways flights to the island.

The Resort
This is my fifth trip to this particular resort with its palm tree lined white coral sand beaches. The vast majority of holiday makers here are families but rather than bedlam, the resort is filled with the sound of happy children at play and relaxed adults.

Children can enjoy the vast array of fun activities at the Mini Club while adults relax in the child-free Zen Oasis, enjoy spa treatments or play a round of golf. The kids activities at the Mini Club are designed around different age groups and run by staff qualified in child care.

But equally for anyone not wishing to leave their child in the Mini Club there are lots of activities based around different age groups which parents can do together with their children. My son and I loved doing the mini golf, toddler tennis and Cirque du Soleil circus skills together. But we were so busy having fun that we ran out of time to try out the nature activities and art classes.

There is a children’s party once a week with bouncy castles, snacks and games for the children to enjoy. And one afternoon each week the staff host a children’s sports afternoon where boys and girls compete in various fun relay races.

Grandma loved the fitness classes such as aqua gym and bums & tums while I tried stand up paddle boarding and swam out to do some snorkelling at the reef just off the beach.

When we were not doing activities my five year old was busy playing with various friends he made in the shallow end of the main pool. We took turns with other parents watching the children and even shared one of the many babysitters with another family as our children had become so close. Or if your children prefer they can join the movie night in the Mini Club while you have a relaxing romantic dinner knowing your children are happy and safe.

The Food
Club Med resorts are all inclusive and this resort has two main restaurants where food is served buffet style with a huge range of delicious offerings as well as unlimited soft drinks and wine which you can help yourself to. When the main restaurants are closed you can still enjoy meals at the seafront beach bar restaurant with spectacular views of the crystal clear sea. The two bars serve cocktails and Prosecco throughout the day and late into the night, all of which are included with your stay.

The Rooms
The rooms have neutral colour schemes with colourful accent pieces. They are extremely spacious – the family rooms have a master bedroom, living room which converts into a children’s room, a dressing area, good sized bathroom, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and complimentary WiFi. However the accommodation whilst spacious could use some updating. When travelling with children I would highly recommend requesting a room in the centre of the resort close to the pool, reception and the Samana restaurant so tired little legs do not have to walk far. If you are travelling with a baby the resort will provide you with a baby cot, baby bath, stroller and bottle steriliser.

Good to Know
Unlike some other Club Med resorts the main language spoken in Punta Cana is English and most of the GOs are originally from Canada.

Unfortunately the children’s pool and some of the playgrounds were being refurbished during our latest stay, however Club Med offered us a partial refund as compensation and we look forward to using the updated children’s areas on our next return trip to the resort.
