Mother’s day Gateaway at Ye Olde Bell!

Kensington Mums had the pleasure of being pampered for a weekend get away at Ye Olde Bell Hotel and Spa in Retford.

As we always emphasise online and in our events, how important it is for mothers to take care of themselves and to to put themselves as priority once in a while. It’s not selfish but a necessity for our own wellbeing, health and sanity.

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

We took a train from Kings Cross to Retford, which was around one hour and a half. I was accompanied by my friend and started chatting away until we arrived. We had ordered a taxi prior to arrival so they can pick us up from the station which was a 10min ride.

Upon arrival, check in was easy and smooth and staff were very helpful in bringing our hand luggage to the room. We waited around 10min for our room to be ready next to a lovely fire place. We immediately felt at home.

We were given room number 2, which had traditional period features, 2 single bed overlooking the green fields. The room was also a connecting room which makes it ideal for families. The hotel had no lift.

After check in, we had a massage booked for us a the Ye Olde Bell Spa. The spa is just opposite the hotel building. As you walk in the spa, you can not help yourself but notice the little attention to details, the fire place in the middle, the comfortable and colourful chairs, the atmosphere was so relaxed and welcoming. We greeted by the reception at the Spa and had to fill a medical questionnaire before our treatment.

We then went to the changing room, they provided us with everything you need from towel, gown, slippers, jewellery bag.  We had booked for 2 duo massage in the lavender room which was made up of 2 beds suitable for couples, friends or mother and daughter experience.

We noticed that each treatment room is named after a herb. We had Katie and Alice with us explaining our treatment and letting us know that they choose oils according to your Chinese Birth Year. The room was perfectly calm, with dimmed lighted and my favourite was that the beds were pre heated, so we felt very warm and cosy.

The treatment lasted one hour, of what I can remember as I dosed off after 15min. The therapist would always ask if the pressure was suitable and made us feel at ease at all times.

After the treatment was over, we felt so relaxed and it was difficult to get up and leave the room. They offered us a glass of water as we went on to the relaxation room for a  bit more blissful nap. We stayed there for a bit, and then went onto the thermal area to try out various experiences including, herbal laconium, the stone Bath and Alpine Sauna. They also have a n indoor/outdoor vitality pool. The spa is always great for birthday parties and hen parties too. After 3 hours in the spa, we left feeling so relaxed and energised to our hotel room where we showered and got ready for dinner. Our dinner was booked in for 8pm at 1650 Restaurant.

We ordered the soup of the day which was carrot and ginger with a side of sweet potatoes. For mains we had the steak which was locally sourced in Retford. It was accompanied with a mushroom sauce, vegetables and fries. The portion was so big that we couldn’t finish it all off, but very soft and tender meat with excellent taste. As for dessert, we asked if we could have it delivered to the room, as a little treat.

We got comfortable into our pyjamas and a few minutes later, our hot chocolate fondant was served on our bed with a side of ice scream. Needless to say it was gone in seconds before dozing off into deep sleep by 9pm on a Saturday night…the best Mother’s day treat ever.

The hotel was very quiet, the bed was so comfortable that we didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. Breakfast was served including full English breakfast and breakfast buffet with a choice of hot and cold foods.

We had our coffee and tea by the fire in the lobby and enjoyed a bit of “me time”, a bit off offline time as much as we could reading newspapers.

We would highly recommend a stay for Mother’s day or any other occasion. The hotel also offers packages including baby showers, proposals, proms, birthdays, weddings and family events such as the upcoming Easter brunch and children activities.

Thank you to Ye Olde Bell Hotel and Spa for having us. It was great Mother’s day treat and now back to reality with our children, family and our organised chaos life.
